Volunteers and philanthropy were in the spotlight at this year’s Citizen of the Year awards on January 26, according to Coweta Community Foundation Executive Director Kristin Webb.

Webb noted that nine of the ten nominees this year all had direct ties to the Foundation and the local nonprofit community, including this year’s winner, current CCF Board Chair Cynthia Bennett, who is a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Along with the honor of being named Coweta’s latest Citizen of the Year, Bennett also received a $1,000 donation for Meals on Wheels.

“It was a wonderful evening celebrating our community leaders,” Webb said. “It has been an honor and privilege to work with Coweta’s philanthropists.”

Webb said she was pleased to see so many individuals being recognized for achievements that include their philanthropic work here in Coweta County.

In addition to Bennett, some of the other nominees this year were Samantha Brazie, who will be a presenter at CCF’s Nonprofit Summit this week and who is a CCF sponsor. Chris Doane, also a Nonprofit Summit presenter, is an agency partner.

Jimmy Ellison is a member of CCF’s Long-Term Recovery (LTR) committee as well as a grantee. Dean Jackson is a past board chair and current board member of CCF. Pastor Terri Lemons is an LTR committee member. Maureen Schuyler is a grantee and agency partner; Kristen Timoteo, grantee and agency partner; and Michael Winslett of DTH Expeditors has served as a sponsor for CCF.

The Citizen of the Year program is presented annually by the Kiwanis Clubs of Coweta County, which say the award “honors an individual showing outstanding leadership and citizenship within the community, someone who has demonstrated exemplary vision, civic pride, and a strong commitment to a better Coweta.”
