The City of Newnan held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, October 29 at the Chalk Level neighborhood. Present at the ceremony were Mayor James Shepherd, Mayor Pro Tem Scott Berta, City Council Members Cynthia Jenkins and Jennifer Morrison, Collins General Construction, Locus Design and Consulting, members of the Housing Authority of Newnan and the Newnan Urban Redevelopment Agency (NURA), Assistant City Managers Hasco Craver and Meg Kelsey, as well as Mary Lauren Golden, Outreach Representative with Senator Warnock’s office, and City staff Tracy Dunnavant and Andrew Moody.

Mayor Shepherd welcomed everyone and said, “All of these redevelopment efforts have been such a long, complicated process, but a very worthwhile process. This was a big and collective effort.” NURA Board Chairman Gerald Walton said, “This was another important step in expanding affordable homeownership opportunities in Newnan” and expressed appreciation for the $4.6 million in federal funding that was secured through Senator Warnock’s efforts.

The final speaker for the groundbreaking was Mary Lauren Golden, Senator Warnock’s Outreach Representative and a Newnan native. Ms. Golden thanked Mayor Shepherd, NURA, and Special Projects Manager Andrew Moody for making this day a reality. “Today’s groundbreaking is bigger than a federal investment. It’s about something a lot more fundamental: a place to call home. As we celebrate in the City of Homes, we are reminded that housing means safety, housing means security, and housing means dignity. Now more than ever, access to affordable housing is essential to the success of our families and our neighborhoods.”
