• Congratulations to John Abbey, 77, who recently shot his age at the Newnan Country Club. For those wondering, he shot a 77, only five shots over par. That is a feat any golfer would love to achieve.

• One of the most important lessons you can learn early is that just because someone does something for a living doesn’t mean they are good at it

• Piedmont Oncology recently recognized its oncologists and local cancer program team members for their efforts to grow Piedmont’s oncology program and provide exceptional cancer care across the state. The inaugural Piedmont Oncology Physician and Staff Recognition Awards recognized 30 recipients in eight award categories. Recipients from Piedmont Newnan included: Andrew Page, M.D., Surgical Oncologist, Piedmont Physicians Group Surgical Oncology/HPB Surgery Newnan – Clinical Research Champion Award Winner; Windy Dean-Colomb, M.D., Medical Oncologist, Piedmont Physicians Group Medical Oncology Newnan – Clinical Research Champion Award Winner; and Jennifer Palmer, Program Coordinator, Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness – Mission Impossible Award Winner

• During your life you will walk by, drive by, sit near and occupy the same rooms with hundreds of thousands of people that you will never meet.

• Young people from more than 40 elementary and middle schools in Coweta, Fayette and Pike counties were recognized this spring for some important non-academic achievements. The Mahaffey Linkous All Smiles Awards, presented by Dr. Mike Mahaffey and Dr. Eric Linkous of Mahaffey Linkous Orthodontics, recognize students in grades 4-8 who consistently uplift their peers and embody a generous spirit.

• The Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteer (MGEV) program proudly awarded five scholarships this year to exceptional students pursuing careers in agriculture, horticulture, environmental sciences, and related fields. The five recipients included: Jack Whittemore, Lana Revere, Audrey Courtney, Sam Knight and Josie Roberson.

• There are a lot more cats named Tom than mice named Jerry.

• Outdoor lifestyle company Mountain High Outfitters has opened in Ashley Park. This is the Birmingham, Ala.-based company’s eighth location in Georgia and 27th overall. The new location is 4,000 sq.ft. and offers some of the latest outdoor lifestyle and everyday apparel, footwear, gear and accessories from many of the premium brands seen around the state.

• Piedmont Oncology welcomed innovative head and neck surgeon and surgical oncologist, Mark W. El-Deiry, M.D, to its team of cancer specialists. Dr. El-Deiry will be based out of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He will also serve as the founding medical director for Piedmont Oncology’s Head and Neck Cancer Program.

• The Cooperative Communicators Association (CCA) recently recognized three distinguished individuals for excellence in communication and leadership. Chellie Phillips, vice president of communications and public relations at Coweta-Fayette EMC, based in Palmetto, was honored with the 2025 H.E. Klinefelter Award. Since 1959, the award has recognized cooperative communicators whose work is deemed outstanding by their peers.

• The average lifespan is 76 years. Middle age isn’t 50 – it’s 38.

• The City of Newnan recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of construction for a significant expansion of the pickleball courts at the popular House of Pickleball (The Hop). The expansion will include six new pickleball courts.

• West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) has announced that its Adult Education program has received a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF). The funds are a part of a record-setting, one-day donation in the Foundation’s history of more than $13.2 million to support adult, family, and summer literacy across the country.

• People are often hesitant to spend more money than necessary, but won’t think twice about procrastinating their time away.

• The Board of Clothes Less Traveled has announced the promotion of Hope Brown to Executive Director. Hope has been an essential member of our Leadership Team since joining the organization in 2021. This promotion is a testament to her exceptional management, people skills and strong values. Hope emulates our values of community, leadership and teamwork, the board said in a statement.

• Silly Putty implies the existence of serious putty.
