Piedmont Newnan Hospital is excited to announce the latest advancement in minimally invasive surgery, the Single Port (SP) da Vinci robot. Piedmont Newnan is the first in the Piedmont system to utilize this innovative tool for head and neck surgical oncology, including transoral robotic surgery (TORS).

This technology allows surgeons to perform a range of procedures with remarkable precision and care and enhances Piedmont Newnan’s comprehensive surgical program. Piedmont Newnan is the second hospital in the Piedmont system to use this cutting-edge technology.

“The single-port robot allows us to surgically treat tumors that historically required high-dose chemotherapy and radiation,” said head and neck surgical oncologist Mark El-Deiry, MD, who also serves as the founding director for Piedmont Oncology’s head and neck cancer program. “Patients who are candidates can expect excellent overall survival as well as better long-term functional outcomes.”

In addition, the new robot now allows patients to undergo thoracic surgery at Piedmont Newnan for the treatment of lung cancer, allowing greater access to compassionate, quality cancer care close to home.

Benefits of robotic surgery can include shorter hospitalization, reduced pain and discomfort, faster return to normal activities, and smaller incisions, among other benefits.

“Having the ability to offer this specialized patient-centered care close to home for patients across the Piedmont system, where their support system and team of healthcare providers are, is such a positive for the patient’s recovery,” said Vicki Kaiser, COO at Piedmont Newnan. “This is another way Piedmont is embracing the leading technology to provide you with exceptional, hassle-free care.”
