The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. If you are eligible, your donation of blood will make a significant impact on the lives of others.

Piedmont Newnan is hosting a blood drive on Friday, Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive to schedule a donation appointment today.

While donated blood is often used to treat trauma patients in the emergency room, it can also benefit cancer patients, women who recently gave birth, and burn victims.

“Blood supply is critical to our ability to serve patients, and we depend on the American Red Cross for this supply,” said Robert Miller, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “All Piedmont hospitals are working with the Red Cross to make sure we are appropriately stocked and are taking steps to conserve blood where we can.”

Piedmont is also encouraging all staff members and volunteers who are able, as well as citizens across Georgia, to consider donating blood at an upcoming blood drive Visit redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive in your area.

“Every donation puts us one step closer to overcoming this emergency blood shortage and saves the lives of our patients,” said Dr. Miller.

There isn’t a blood type out there that would be turned away; all are welcome; all are needed. Platelet donors and Type O blood donors, especially, are encouraged to donate.
