Local artist Ann Lynn Whiteside introduced a group of women educators to weaving recently, giving them the opportunity to make mug rugs.

A mug rug is a coaster created for a hot cup of coffee, cocoa, or tea.

“When I taught, I taught art, and one of the units we did was weaving. The kids loved it,” Whiteside said, speaking to DKG Mu Chapter members during their meeting on February 13 in downtown Newnan.

Mu member Karen Goodell-Webb was instrumental in planning the weaving program. “One of the things I always wanted to learn was weaving,” she said. “So after I retired and moved back here, I signed up for one of Ann Lynn’s classes.” She has been weaving ever since.

Goodell-Webb created a kit for each member which contained  a loom, scissors, needle, threader, and comb. Whiteside gave instructions for the projects, and members selected their yarns from a wide variety available. Members started their projects and then received instructions on how to remove their mug rug from the loom once completed.

Having the opportunity to engage in a creative activity after a long day in the classroom just before the mid-winter break was blissful. “I experienced a moment of zen while weaving my Georgia red mug rug – relaxed and at peace,” Mu Chapter President Shronda Smith said. “Thank you for providing the supplies and for your time.”

DKG is a professional honor society for women educators with more than 55,000 members. There are 58 DKG chapters in Georgia with more than 1,600 members. Mu Chapter serves Coweta County and the surrounding area.
