Piedmont Newnan Earns Reaccreditation for Bariatrics Program
Piedmont Newnan Hospital has received reaccreditation under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The hospital started its bariatrics program in 2016 and first earned MBSAQIP accreditation in 2023. The current accreditation extends through 2028.
MBSAQIP is a comprehensive, nationwide surgical quality program aimed at ensuring the safe and effective performance of metabolic and bariatric surgery. To earn reaccreditation, Piedmont Newnan’s bariatrics program met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure as well as protocols for care. As part of the review, an experienced bariatric surgeon conducted an extensive site visit, assessing the program’s structure, processes and clinical outcomes data—including weight loss and treatment of obesity-related diseases like diabetes and sleep apnea.
“Our team is honored to once again receive MBSAQIP accreditation,” said Angela Harrison, RN-BSN, bariatrics surgery program coordinator at Piedmont Newnan. “The designation reflects our commitment to helping patients achieve sustainable, long-term weight loss through outstanding care.”
Piedmont Newnan’s bariatrics program, led by our chief of bariatrics, Roger Eduardo, M.D., includes a surgeon who provides medical and surgical weight-loss treatment options as well as dietitians who support patients with meal planning and lifestyle guidance. In addition, the program offers several free support groups throughout each month for both patients preparing for bariatric surgery and for patients who have already had bariatric surgery. The team cares for about 80 patients each year.
Research shows that accredited centers experience lower complications and better outcomes than those of non-accredited facilities.
