With the grandkids out of school, summer is a perfect time to get outside and make lifelong memories. It’s also a great excuse to shake off those winter blues and soak up a little vitamin D.

We love short day trips that offer a bit of fun, a change of pace, and when it’s just the two of us, some quality time together. Whether you’re flying solo, exploring with a partner, or piling into the car with a few grandkids, there are plenty of great spots just a short drive from Newnan.

Less than an hour away in Pine Mountain, Callaway Gardens is one of our go-to spots. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and there’s always something to do. You can stroll through the butterfly center, dip your toes in the lake beach, or take a leisurely nature walk. They’ve even got golf carts and trams to take you around if you need it.

We love the annual pass. If you go more than twice a year, it’s totally worth it. We’ll often pack a picnic, head over for a couple of hours and not feel like we have to stay all day just to get our money’s worth. And in the summer, there are concerts on the beach, fireworks, and other fun events. This is a great day trip for when the grandkids are in tow or just the two of you.

If it’s been a while since you visited Warm Springs and the Little White House, this summer might be the time to go back. It’s a meaningful place full of history, and older grandkids usually find it interesting (especially if they’re into presidents or WWII). For us grown-ups, it’s a lovely reminder of the past and a slower, quieter way of spending an afternoon.

Just 30 minutes from Newnan, Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills feels like a little escape to a different world. It’s this beautiful mix of nature, creativity, and calm. You can enjoy a farm-to-table lunch, catch a show at the outdoor theater, or wander through the organic farms and art galleries. On Saturday mornings, there’s a farmers market that’s fun for all ages.

For something super close, Chattahoochee Bend State Park is a hidden gem. It’s perfect for a shaded walk, a riverside picnic, or just soaking in some nature. You don’t have to be an avid hiker. There are plenty of easy paths and it never feels too crowded. Bring a pair of comfy shoes, a folding chair, and you’re set.

About an hour and a half away in Columbus, the National Infantry Museum is an unforgettable experience. The exhibits take you through every era of American military history, from the Revolutionary War to today. It’s air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible, and free (though they do appreciate donations). We’ve been more than once—and still haven’t seen everything! My husband is one of those “read-every-plaque” types, so we usually take our time and spread it over two trips. There’s also a quiet café inside, so you can sit down, grab a bite, and talk about everything you’ve seen. It’s a powerful visit and one of the most meaningful day trips you can take.

You don’t have to go far to find fun, fresh air, and a little adventure. These nearby spots are perfect for making summer memories—whether you’re chasing butterflies with the grandkids, sharing a quiet meal at Serenbe, or just enjoying a shaded bench with a good view and great company. So pack a cooler, charge your phone for pictures, and hit the road. The best kind of summer stories often start just a short drive from home.
