2,100 Tires brought in during Tire Amnesty event

For the second year in a row, Keep Newnan Beautiful collaborated with Coweta County for the organization’s annual Tire Amnesty Day event on Saturday, March 9.

This year’s event brought in more than 2,100 tires – filling up two tractor trailers from both collection sites: Hunter Recreation Complex in Sharpsburg and the City of Newnan’s Public Works location.

“Tires are difficult for the environment, they hold water, bugs and creatures. This event has been a great, free alternative to help keep our community clean,” said Page Beckwith, Keep Newnan Beautiful director.

Keep Newnan Beautiful works closely with the community to help educate, motivate and empower the residents of Newnan to take greater responsibility for improving the community environment through its various educational projects. Volunteers for the event included Southside Church, members of the Keep Newnan Beautiful Commission, staff and administration from Coweta County. 

“The event was a great opportunity for the county to connect with the city of Newnan, to help clean up various areas throughout Coweta County,” said Tim Shelnutt, supervisor for Code Enforcement with Coweta County. “We were also very thankful to have support from the county’s administration.”

In addition to support from both the city and county, the event is typically created through a trust fund grant allocated for tire disposal by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. “The state of Georgia’s EPD sets aside funds for a grant through land protection to properly dispose of tires, which gives us assistance in covering the costs for removing, transporting, and processing scrap tires cleaned up from the city and county.”

Residents from both the city and county were asked to bring tires that were free from debris and rims to the event.
