Prep Football: East Coweta-Newnan highlight Week 2

Rivalry Week comes early in the 2023 high school football season.
East Coweta travels to Newnan on Friday for the annual cross-county battle. This year’s contest begins at 7:30 p.m. at Drake Stadium.
East Coweta won a year ago, 38-17, in Sharpsburg. The Indians picked up a thrilling 28-21 victory over Starr’s Mill in their season-opener last Saturday. It was the first of three games of the 4th Annual Coweta-Fayette Kickoff Classic at Newnan’s Drake Stadium. Derrion Horsley broke a 21-21 tie with about 8 minutes left in the game with a long kickoff return for a touchdown.
Newnan didn’t fare as well in the nightcap of the Kickoff Classic, spotting visiting Sandy Creek a 25-7 lead at halftime before falling 44-24.
Prior to Friday’s game, Newnan High School will retire the jersey of the late Drew Hill, who graduated from NHS in 1975. He played at Georgia Tech before starting a 14-year NFL career, mostly with the Los Angeles Rams.
The Coweta County School System has announced parking and entry information leading up the the East Coweta-Newnan tilt.
• The entrance into the game for Newnan fans will be off of Armory Road, via Boomer Lane.
• The entrance for East Coweta fans will be off Sewell Road, by the NHS softball field.
• Handicap parking will be limited, but golf carts will be circling the area to provide rides for those that need assistance.
• Parking will also be available at Smokey Road Middle School. Shuttle buses will operate from Smokey Road Middle to Newnan High School from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
• Students are not permitted to carry backpacks into the stadium. Middle school students attending the game must be accompanied by a paying adult

Also last week, Northgate jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the third quarter and whipped Whitewater, 31-18, in the middle game of the Kickoff Classic. The Vikings travel to Starr’s Mill on Friday with kickoff now set for 8 p.m.
Trinity Christian struggled in its opener last week. The Lions ran into a good Woodward Academy squad at College Park and fell 45-8. Trinity Christian will try to regroup when it hosts Fellowship Christian on Friday.
Both Central Christian and Heritage School open their 2023 campaigns on Friday. Central Christian travels to Vidalia Heritage while Heritage School visits Chambers Academy.
