Prep Football: Heritage School, East Coweta continue to shine

From Staff Reports

Four weeks into the 2022 high school football season, there’s some early surprises that have taken place so far.

East  Coweta dropped its opener but has bounced back to win three straight and is 3-1 on the season. Two weeks ago, quarterback Christian Langford tossed a school-record 6 TD passes  in a 55-21 triumph at Hillgrove. And last Friday, the Indians took a 23-20 win from visiting 4-A power Sandy Creek. East Coweta faces another perennial power on Friday, hosting Lowndes (2-1). Kickoff is 8 p.m.

The Heritage School Hawks find themselves at 3-0 with lopsided wins over St. Mary’s (72-0), Creekside Christian (54-0) and Kendrick (44-6). Coach Jake Copeland’s squad has made a quick turnaround after finishing winless a year ago. The Hawks switched from GHSA to the GIAA  – Georgia Independent Athletic Association (formerly GISA) last winter. The Hawks were open last week and visit Cross Keys (0-3) in Atlanta on Friday.

Defending state champion Trinity Christian got into the win column Sept. 2 on the road at Mary Persons. The Lions, now 1-2, took a hard-fought 31-20 victory for their first as a new member of GHSA 4-A. Trinity Christian was off last week and returns to action at home on Friday against Riverdale, which is 2-2.

Both Newnan (1-2) and Northgate (1-3) picked up their first wins of 2022 last week. Newnan blasted Hardaway, 49-7, at Drake Stadium on Thursday while Northgate bested Griffin, 33-28, at Henry Seldon Field one day later. The Cougars host 3-1 Paulding County tomorrow and the Vikings hit the road to face another 3-1 squad Central Carroll.

Central Christian, back in GAPPS 8-man football, is 1-2 on the year. The Crusaders opened the season with a 41-0 win over New Creation, then has dropped consecutive games to Victory Baptist  (22-19) and Fideles Christian (36-14). Central travels to Lafayette Christian (2-1) this week.
