The Bookmark: Coweta Library System Hotter than July!

By JIMMY BASS, Coweta Public Library System Director
The year was 1980 when Stevie Wonder released the album “Hotter than July.” His previous album had disappointed critically and commercially, but “Hotter” received rave reviews while burning up the Billboard charts.
All of us at the Coweta Library System are feeling pretty hot too as we blow up our previous circulation records and welcome outstanding entertainers throughout July. This will lead to the always popular Summer Reading Challenge Finale Party at the Central Library on July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is not too late to sign up for our Summer Reading program; we are still welcoming readers and giving out prizes. Our previous summer sign-up numbers have been overrun by happy readers… come join the crowd!
So, we hit July and boy, can it be hotter in every sense of the word?? The show will go on at all libraries as we offer over 90 programs in July alone while bringing in the most professional library entertainers working today. Please allow me to give you some examples. Our staff-created and led programs include Sightseeing Story Time at Grantville, Around the World in 49 Days at Powell, Young Explorers STEM at Central Library, and STEAM Wednesdays at Senoia Library. Go to our website at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org for all events to see dates and times.
Also, we bring in the big guns for July special programs as local and nationally known magician Ken Scott brings his special brand of family entertainment to our Central and Powell branches. We welcome the always on time Dave Holland and his Drumming Up Stories program, and we go back in time with the Lee Bryan Puppets presents Niko as Doctor Dinosaur. We will have yoga, cooking shows, Bingo, a Bubblepalooza Foam party, and some great art and crafts programs. You can find all the pertinent info on our website.
Finally, we will tie the summer programming up in a big red bow with our Finale Friday party at the Central Library on July 20. Beginning at 10 o’clock, the finale will feature performers, music, food, sweets, crafts, and our own Coweta Recreation Department will be there with fun games and challenges. We will welcome Ron Anglin, juggler extraordinaire, and the always awesome Cricket’s Petting Zoo. There will be prizes as we celebrate our winning readers. As Stevie himself would say, July is going to be a Master Blaster!! We hope to see you lots in July!
