On July 27th, the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation held an Ice Cream Sundae Summer Reading Celebration at the Carnegie Library for participants of the 2024 Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Every year City of Newnan Mayor Keith Brady invites area elementary school students to participate in a summer reading challenge. For every sixty minutes students read, they were eligible to receive a treat from generous Newnan businesses!

The Summer Reading Celebration included students sharing their favorite books, authors, genres and why they read. There were also several activities to do include coloring a special bookmark, making words with scrabble letters, and playing with Legos. Mayor Brady gave a delightful reading of the books Splat the Cat and The Bear Ate Your Sandwich. The celebration concluded with ice cream sundaes with all the toppings!

“The Mayor’s Summer Reading program is always such a fun way to spend the summer,” says Carnegie Director Susan Crutchfield. “Not only do kids get to read some amazing books they always create fun memories receiving their prizes at downtown Newnan businesses. This would not have been possible without the support of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation and a grant from the Newnan Kiwanis Club.”

The Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation would like to thank the generous local sponsors who donated treats to the students: Georgia Chocolate Factory, Wishbone, Mad Mexican, Fabiano’s, Redneck Gourmet, Whit’s Frozen Custard, Cakes by Debbie and Rock Salt Milk Bar.
