City of Newnan hosts Murray Street Project Groundbreaking

From city of Newnan Press Release
The city of Newnan recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the Murray Street Project.
“This critically important project and historic investment was funded in part by ARPA,” said Newnan Mayor Keith Brady. “It’s something that is much needed on this street.”
Brady went on to thank the City Council, the NURA Board and City staff including City Manager Cleatus Phillips, Assistant City Manager Hasco Craver, Planning and Zoning Director Tracy Dunnavant, and Special Projects Manager Andrew Moody. City Council Members Ray DuBose and Dustin Koritko were also present at the groundbreaking.
The Murray Street Project includes a total of seven (7) affordable/workforce housing units, which will be constructed on lots owned by the City of Newnan. The City Council entrusted the Newnan Urban Redevelopment Agency (NURA) Board to manage and implement the investment of Murray Street.
NURA Board Chairman Gerald Walton explained, “Access to affordable and workforce housing is an issue we are diligently working to address. And the Murray Street project, while not the beginning, is a significant step in the right direction.”
“The Housing Authority of Newnan will place qualified families in the homes and begin a lease to purchase program. Families will lease the home with a percentage of the monthly rent being placed in an escrow account to be utilized as a down payment when the individual is qualified to purchase the property. Families will go through homeowner education to learn the essential skills of owning a home. Upon the sale of the home, the City will use the income generated to establish a revolving fund that will allow us to continue to invest in affordable workforce housing option throughout Newnan Urban Redevelopment Areas. This is a project that has required intense behind the scenes efforts to get to this point and we’re excited to see the culmination of our work. We hope this historic investment to Murray Street will serve as a catalyst for revitalization in other neighborhoods and a beacon of affordable/workforce housing opportunities.”
The Newnan Urban Redevelopment Agency (NURA) promotes programs and activities within the City’s designated Urban Redevelopment Authority area. The board meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6 pm in the Richard A. Bolin Council Chambers at Newnan City Hall (25 LaGrange Street).
