Local Sports Calendar This Week: Aug. 28-Sept. 4

High School football enters its third week of the 2023 season with five games set among local squads on Friday.
Four of the local teams will be at home as Hillgrove visits East Coweta, Villa Rica travels to Northgate, Mary Persons is at Trinity Christian and Unity Christian plays at Central Christian. Heritage School is on the road at Kendrick while Newnan has an open date.
The major college football season gets underway with a bevy of games from Thursday through Monday. Defending national champion Georgia hosts UT-Martin on Saturday night while Georgia Tech will entertain visiting Louisville on Friday night.
The Braves are in the midst of a 10-game road trip out west. Atlanta is at Colorado for three games beginning tonight before a huge four-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers starts Thursday. United has a pair of games this week as does the Dream.
In the NFL, Atlanta opens its season on Sept. 10 at home against Carolina.
