November Calendar: Veterans, Food Bank Events, Holiday Shopping & Santa

November is best known for a pair of holidays – Veterans Day and Thanksgiving – and this month, Coweta County is also offering an assortment of pre-holiday functions to get folks ready for the countdown to Christmas.
A pair of Veterans events jumpstart the month with the Veterans Expo set for the Summit YMCA on Nov. 4 and the annual Veterans Day Ceremony in downtown Newnan on November 11.
Helping families in need and the local food banks is the focus of this year’s T-Shirts for Turkeys four-day occurrence, sponsored by The Joy FM and 1st Franklin Financial. Trade frozen turkeys for T-Shirts from November 8-11. Another wonderful event is the 38th Annual NJSL Can-A-Thon is Nov. 30.
Market Day is the first Saturday of the month in downtown Newnan and Watercrest Senior Living is hosting a Caregiver Carnival on Nov. 11 to honor Caregivers and their dedication in assisting seniors.
Then both Main Street Newnan and Ashley Park begin preparations for the Christmas Shopping Season with a pair of happenings – November 19 (Holiday Sip & See in downtown Newnan) and November 20 (Lights Up at Ashley Park). There’s also a two-day Holiday Open House at Lee-King Pharmacy on Nov. 10 and 11.
The month culminates with another annual gathering around the downtown Newnan Square as Santa Claus rides in for a two-hour visit with kids and families.
Here’s a brief description of several events scheduled for November.
November 4 – Veteran’s Expo
Summit Family YMCA of Newnan
Come out to the Summit Y and support your local veteran-owned businesses and military outreach programs. Begins at 4:15 p.m. Free T-Shirts to the first 200 adults in attendance. Nancy Davis kicks off the event singing the National Anthem, Rosie the Riveter will randomly hand out prizes throughout the afternoon to a few lucky winners, and at 6 p.m. Coweta Quilts of Valor will have a ceremony honoring a local veteran with a quilt.
November 6 – Market Day
Courthouse Square, Newnan
The market showcases a variety of handmade, homemade, and homegrown products created by local artisans, artists, and farmers. The market will feature 30 unique booths with new vendors and one-of-a-kind items each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
November 7 – Daylight Saving Time Ends
November 8-11 – T-Shirts for Turkeys
This annual four-day event is sponsored by The Joy FM and 1st Franklin Financial as both need your help in stocking the freezers of the many food banks and ministries who feed local, hurting families. Donated frozen turkeys go immediately into the freezers o the area food banks and homeless shelters. Come out and trade a turkey for a newly designed Joy FM T-shirt (will also accept $10 gift cards from any local grocery store). 1st Franklin Financial of Newnan will be assisting at these Chick-fil-A drop-off locations.

November 10-11 – Holiday Open House
Lee-King Pharmacy • 18 Cavendar Street, Newnan
Two days of a Holiday Open House at Lee-King Pharmacy in Newnan on Wednesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 11. The two-day shopping extravaganza will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and feature a Sidewalk Sale, discounts, giveaways and much, much more.
November 11 – Veteran’s Day Ceremony
Veteran’s Memorial Park, Downtown Newnan
The annual gathering of veterans to show and appreciate what they sacrificed and the support they have within our community. Bring your chairs. Begins at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony, a drive-by Luncheon at the Coweta Veteran’s Club.
November 11 – Caregiver Carnival
Watercrest Senior Living • 285 Summerlin Blvd., Newnan
An event filled with fun, frivolity and refreshments while honoring Caregivers and recognizing their selflessness and dedication. Begins at 2 p.m. RSVP 833-297-1281.
November 19 – Holiday Sip & See
Hosted by Main Street Newnan from 5-9 p.m. This event is a great opportunity for visitors to get started on their holiday shopping while the holiday inventory is plentiful! There will also be a night market, live music, and food trucks along with hor d’oeuvres and refreshments from the retailers.
November 20 – Lights Up
Ashley Park, Newnan
Festive music, free activities, Santa’s arrival, snowfall and the countdown to the Tree Lighting in front of Dillard’s.
November 25 – Thanksgiving Day
November 26 – Plaid Friday
Shop in downtown Newnan and simplify your Day-After-Thanksgiving experience! The name “Plaid Friday” celebrates the idea of LOCAL! Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday.”
November 26 – Black Friday
On the Green, Ashley Park, Newnan
Live Jazz music and hot chocolate from 10 a.m. to noon.
November 26 – Santa on the Square
Santa on the Square is hosted each year on the day after Thanksgiving. Santa will arrive downtown in a Fire Truck, and will immediately light the Christmas tree located on the Court House Square. After the lighting of the Christmas tree, children are invited to sit on Santa’s lap and read him their Christmas list! Takes place from 6-8 p.m.
November 27 – Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday is an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
November 30 – NJSL Can-A-Thon
Courthouse Square, Newnan; Regions Bank, Thomas Crossroads
The 38th Annual Newnan Junior Service League Can-A-Thon will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at two locations.
