Prep Football: Northgate, Heritage School advance to 2nd round play

From Staff Reports

The number is now down to two. That’s Northgate and Heritage School … the only Coweta County schools left in the high school football state playoffs.

Both Northgate and Heritage School picked up wins in their respective first round state playoff games last weekend to advance. East Coweta and Trinity Christian saw their seasons come to an end with losses in a pair of road games.

Northgate whipped visiting Arabia Mountain, 38-14, on Saturday to get to the second round. The Vikings, now 5-6 overall, have won three consecutive games and four of their last five. Northgate now hits the road to Hampton to face Region 2 champ Dutchtown, a 45-0 winner over Statesboro, last week to improve to 10-1 on the year.

Heritage School rolled to a 27-0 halftime lead at home over Lakeview Academy on its way to a 36-6 victory. The Hawks, 8-3 overall, now travel to Milledgeville on Friday to take on GIAA 3A top-ranked John Milledge Academy which is 10-0 on the season.

If Northgate wins, it will face the winner of Cass at Mayes. And if Heritage School advances, it will travel to the Terrell Academy at Valwood winner.

East Coweta ended its season at 6-5 following the 44-33 loss to always-tough Camden County at Kingsland on Saturday. The Indians actually led 21-17 at halftime, but couldn’t get the offense going down the stretch.

Trinity Christian, the defending GHSA 1A Private Champions, finished its first year in 4A at 6-5 overall. The Lions lost on the road to Wayne County, 31-13 last week in the first round after keeping the game a one-score contest through three quarters.

Newnan (4-6) and Central Christian (2-8) did not reach the state playoffs this season.
