Sports: High School Football, Pro Teams on TV

High School Football kicked off its 2021 season this past weekend as all six Coweta County teams hit the gridiron.
All six are back in action this week with games on Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
The Trinity Christian Lions are ranked as high as No. 2 in the GHSA 1-A Private polls and will travel to Mount Vernon. The Lions whipped Athens Academy, 59-7, in their season opener last week.
East Coweta was another winner in the opening week, downing Whitewater 41-24 in the first game of the 2021 Chick-fil-A Coweta-Fayette Kickoff Classic. The Indians will now host New Manchester with kickoff at 8 p.m.
Newnan and Northgate hope to break into the win columns in week No. 2. Newnan dropped a 28-14 decision to Starr’s Mill in the Kickoff Classic. The Cougars journey to always-tough Carrollton this week. Northgate fell to Sandy Creek, 24-3, in the Kickoff Classic and travels to Locust Grove this Friday.
Heritage School and Central Christian will also be looking for win No. 1 on Friday. The Heritage School Hawks lost its home opener to Greenville, 23-10. The Hawks host powerful Eagle’s Landing Christian this week. Central Christian fell to North Georgia, 24-18, in its season opener and visits Notre Dame Academy in Duluth on Friday.

The Atlanta Braves are riding a 9-game win streak and are winners of 16 of their last 18. The Braves face the surging New York Yankees in a two-game set at Truist Park and host the San Francisco Giants in a three-game set over the weekend. Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 5 games in the National League East with a 68-56 record.

The Atlanta Falcons conclude their preseason schedule with a home game vs. the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The Falcons are 0-2 on the preseason following a 37-17 loss at Miami on Saturday.

Atlanta United has begun its playoff push and are winners of four consecutive matches, including Saturday’s 2-1 win at D.C. United. The United is 6-9-6 in MLS action with 27 points, good enough for 8th place in the Eastern Conference.

Women’s National Basketball Association
The Atlanta Dream is in the midst of an 8-game losing streak after Saturday’s 84-69 loss to Phoenix. Atlanta is 6-17 on the season and in 5th place in the Eastern Conference.
