THE SKINNY – Coweta County recorded an average of 46 new COVID-19 cases per day last week, the highest daily rate since late January.

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Friday, Aug. 20 from  the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 324 new COVID-19 cases with 1 death and 9 hospitalizations during the past week – Aug. 14-20.

The 324 cases and per day average of 46.2 were the most and highest in a single week since 362 cases (51.7 per day) were recorded from Jan. 24-30. It was also an increase of 57 cases from the previous week (Aug. 7-13). The highest single day total last week was 75 on Friday, the 14th-highest daily total here in Coweta since the pandemic started.

Coweta also reported 6 COVID-related hospitalizations on Friday, tying the single-day mark of 6 set back on May 12.

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 107,889 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through August 20. Of those, 59,965 people or 42 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 51,889 or 36 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated. By comparison, neighbor Fayette County has a vaccination rate of 60 percent with 1 dose and 54 percent fully vaccinated.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.4 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 21.5 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.2 and 21.4, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 9888 cases, 229 deaths (with an additional 14 probable deaths) and 438 hospitalizations thru August 13 from when the pandemic began. Coweta remains ranked 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 17th in deaths due to COVID and 36th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA CASES

This past week, Georgia confirmed 36,996 new COVID cases for an average of 5285 per day. That’s an increase of 8277 cases from last week’s reporting period (Aug. 7-13). Thursday’s daily total of 7003 new COVID cases was the most in a single day last week and 9th-highest daily total since the pandemic began. Georgia also surpassed the cumulative total of 1 million COVID cases on Tuesday.

Other numbers for the past week included 192 deaths (up 34), 1256 hospitalizations (up 233) and 130 ICU admits (down 18).

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 9,345,810 vaccinations have been applied here in Georgia through August 20. Of those, 5,136,508 Georgia residents or 49 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 4,371,791 or 42 percent have been fully vaccinated.

All four patient census categories rose in the past week. The number of COVID Patients Hospitalized is now at 5151 or 30.6 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia (up 944 from last week). ICU Beds in Use rose by 72 and is now 2712 or 89.5 percent capacity statewide. In-Patient Hospital Beds in Use also increased by 77, now standing at 12,977 or 83.6 percent capacity. And Adult Ventilators in Use rose by 213 and now is at 1705 or 45.3 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 10.9 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 17.1 percent. Last week, those numbers were 10.7 and 15.5, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,019,585 cases, 19,179 deaths, 70,108 hospitalizations and 11,766 ICU admits thru Aug. 20 from when the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8, 2021); deaths (184 on Feb. 12, 2021); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6, 2021); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12, 2020).
