Weekly Report: Coweta adds 34 cases, 0 deaths week of May 17-23

THE SKINNY – For the first time since in almost a year, Coweta County recorded a day without a single COVID-19 case.
The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Sunday, May 23. Below is a summary for the week of May 17-23 with data from the Georgia DPH on Coweta County, neighboring counties and the state of Georgia.
COWETA COUNTY CASES
Coweta County confirmed 34 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 0 deaths and 3 hospitalizations.
The 34 confirmed cases (down 22 from a week ago) gave Coweta an average of 4.8 per day. It’s the lowest number of cases in a week in exactly one year when the county posted 31 cases from May 17-23, 2020. And Coweta did have one day – yesterday (Sunday) with 0 cases – the first time that’s happened since June 7, 2020. The high mark for the week was 9 on Thursday, May 20. The county extended its streak to 75 consecutive days below 20 cases.
The 0 deaths (down 1 from last week) marked the first time since Dec. 13-19, 2020 the county had no deaths.
The 3 hospitalizations (down 7 from last week) gave Coweta an average of 0.4 per day. The last time the county had only 3 hospitalizations in a week came a couple months ago – March 15-21.
In May, Coweta has recorded 157 cases (6.8 per day), 2 deaths (0.08 per day) and 21 hospitalizations (0.9 per day). So far, May’s numbers are slightly down when compared to daily averages in April – 8.2 cases per day, 0.8 deaths and 1.3 hospitalizations.
The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.4 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 3.9 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.4 and 4.5, respectively.
Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 8802 cases, 207 deaths (with an additional 13 probable deaths) and 370 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases and 18th in deaths due to COVID.
The age groups of 45-54 year olds had the most new COVID cases in the past week with 8.

GEORGIA CASES
In the past week, Georgia confirmed 3155 new COVID-19 cases (down 738 from a week ago) for an average of 450 per day. Georgia now owns a streak of 85 straight days below 2000 cases, the longest streak since April 5 to June 27 in 2020. The high for cases was 649 on Thursday, May 20. The week’s low was 306 cases yesterday (Sunday), the lowest for Georgia since 284 on April 12, 2020.
Georgia also recorded 126 deaths in the past week (up 23 from a week ago) for an average of 18 per day. Other numbers included 523 hospitalizations (up 55) and 122 ICU Admits (up 29).
Two patient census categories rose slightly in the past week. ICU Bed Occupancy climbed to 2275 (up 11 from last week) or 76.1 percent capacity. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state increased to 11,976 (up 339 from last week) or at 78.9 percent capacity.
Two patient census groups fell last week. COVID Patients Hospitalized in Georgia dropped by 97, now standing at 799 which is 5.2 percent of all statewide hospital patients. And Adult Ventilators in use decreased, now at 966 (down 15) or 27.0 percent capacity.
The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.1 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 3.2 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.1 and 3.9, respectively.
Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 893,422 cases, 17,930 deaths, 63,189 hospitalizations and 10,431 ICU admits since the pandemic began.
Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (184 on Feb. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).
ONE YEAR AGO
On May 24, 2020, Georgia had confirmed a cumulative total of 42,902 new COVID-19 cases with 1827 deaths.
Coweta had confirmed 331 cumulative COVID-19, 8 deaths and 50 hospitalizations on this date a year ago.
Cumulative case and death totals in Coweta and surrounding counties thru May 24 had Fulton with 4054-196, Carroll at 445-24, Coweta 331-8, Spalding 253-14, Troup 250-9, Fayette 220-11, Meriwether 78-1 and Heard 26-2.
