Home Helpers of Georgia and Alabama recently won a pair of national awards. The first honor was a 2018 Pinnacle Club Award for growth among the Home Helpers locations. The Newnan office was recognized as the No. 3 office in growth for the past year. The second accolade – Provider of Choice Award – was presented by Home Care Pulse. Home Helpers of Georgia and Alabama scored 97 percent in client satisfaction.The company is now run by Executive Director Grant Dow, who took over the Newnan-based company from his parents, Beth and Phillip Dow.

Stevi B’s, a popular pizza restaurant with an all-you-can-eat buffet, has closed. The pizza parlor was located in the Walmart shopping center complex on Bullsboro Drive. No sign or any other indication if they are moving or closed for good.
Looks like Uncle Maddio’s has met a similar fate. The pizza parlor, in Ashley Park in front of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, hasn’t opened for some time. There’s no note or other information available. A quick Google search says it is “temporarily closed.”
Restaurant servers who give customers plastic drinking straws they haven’t asked for will have to suck up a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine or six months in prison under a controversial bill in California. The bill was introduced in the State Assembly by Majority Leader Ian Calderon who said he wanted to ‘raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic straws on our environment.” He claims more than 500 million plastic straws are thrown away every day.
We are all for term limits, especially for those pesky folks up in Washington, D.C. But there are exceptions to every rule. As in the case of Ginger Jackson-Queener, who has stepped down after her three-year term expired as chairwoman of the Coweta Community Foundation. She made an incredible impact, increasing funding each year and raising the visibility of local non-profits. Two thumbs up and a golf clap, madam. And to Will Conoly, the new chairman, we wish you well.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport served more passengers and conducted more aircraft movements than any other airport in the world in 2017. Pending confirmation from industry trade group Airports Council International, 2017 marks the 20th consecutive year ATL will be named the busiest airport in the world. ATL remains the only airport ever to reach the 100 million passenger mark in a single year; 2017 is the third consecutive year it surpassed this milestone.

Former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue was the “designated survivor” during President Trump’s State of the Union address. Perdue, who is now Agriculture Secretary in the Trump administration, was kept at a secured location until after the address. If the entire line of presidential succession had been wiped out in a disaster, Perdue would have become president.

The Lee Middle School Math Team recently took first place at the West Georgia regional Mathcounts competition at the University of West Georgia, earning the team a spot at the state finals. This is the fifth consecutive first place finish for the school. The team consisted of students Michael An, Matthew Nix, Do-kyong McDonald, Nathan White, Andrew Brown, Beomseok Kang, Alex Carroll, Lyong-kyong McDonald. Jiho Oh and Alex Carroll, and was sponsored by teachers Lynette Hanus and Staci Kelly. The team competed against the 40 students of the school’s math club to earn their spots on the competition team.

Fastenal Company is furthering its partnership with West Georgia Technical College, giving $3,000 toward student scholarships for WGTC commercial truck driving students. West Georgia Tech offers both day and evening commercial truck driving courses on both the Carroll and LaGrange campuses. The day program takes eight weeks and the night program takes 10 weeks to complete.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) said Corvaglia Group, a Switzerland based supplier to the beverage industry, will build a new manufacturing facility in Newnan. The new operation will create a variety of advanced manufacturing jobs and bring an investment of $25 million to Coweta County. “Our economic development successes are based on strong partnerships, and Corvaglia’s decision to build a facility in Newnan is a result of these efforts,” said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. “Our economic development partners played a huge role in landing this project, and I am grateful for their commitment to the state. Coweta County is perfectly suited to meet the needs of this company, and I look forward to their future success.”
Alan Jackson will be among the 2018 inductees to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The association is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of composers and lyricists who create music. To qualify for induction, a songwriter must be a published writer for a minimum of 20 years with a notable catalog of hit songs. Jackson will become one of just over 400 songwriters so honored.

Urban Air Newnan will feature 30,000 square feet of trampoline and adventure park attractions. Urban Air Newnan will be furnished with wall-to-wall trampoline arenas, Dodgeball Courts, Stunt Airbag, Slam Dunk Tracks, Runway Tumble Track, The TUBES Obstacle Course, The Urban Warrior Course™, and Warrior Battle Beam. Urban Air Newnan will also be home to the Urban Air Adventure Hub, which includes exclusive adventure park attractions that can only be found at Urban Air, such as an Indoor Ropes Course, Indoor Climbing Walls, Pro Zone Performance Trampoline Pit, and the exhilarating new attraction Urban Air Sky Rider Indoor Coaster. Guests can also go grab a bite to eat at the Urban Cafe.
Newnan Fire Chief David Whitley is retiring after 30 years with the department. He first joined NFD in 1987 as a firefighter. Back then, there was one fire station and about 25 employees. Those personnel have more than doubled, and the city hopes to add a fourth station next year. We thank you for your service.
