THE SKINNY – September was not a good month for Coweta County when it came to COVID-19. A total of eight records involving cases, deaths and hospitalizations were broken.

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data for Coweta thru Thursday, Sept. 30 from  the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Records, records and more records were the theme, especially midway through September, for Coweta County as the Georgia Department of Public Health released its daily status reports. When looking at the overall COVID-19 numbers, September will likely have the most milestones since the pandemic began.

For the month, Coweta confirmed 1,558 cases for an average of 51.9 per day. It was the fourth-highest number of monthly cases trailing only 1,866 in January, 1,626 in August and 1,620 in December. Other numbers for September included record-highs of 46 deaths (previous high 41 in February) and 199 hospitalizations (previous high 95 in August). Coweta saw an increase of 33 deaths and 104 hospitalizations from its August totals.

Daily record-highs were set across the board – 168 cases on Sept. 3; 6 deaths on Sept. 16; and 25 hospitalizations on Sept. 14.

And Coweta had the highest case numbers in a week – 634 from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3 – as well as the third-highest cases in a week (478, Sept. 4-10) plus weekly record-highs in deaths (15, Sept. 11-17) and hospitalizations (76, Sept. 18-24). 

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 123,643 vaccinations have been applied here in Coweta County through Sept. 30. Of those, 67,519 people or 47 percent have 1 dose of the vaccine while 59,621 or 42 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated.

The positive test rate on Sept. 30 of all persons tested in Coweta was 11.2 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 12.1 percent. On Sept. 1, those test rates were at 10.8 and 20.7, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 12,293 cases, 281 deaths (with an additional 22 probable deaths) and 711 hospitalizations thru Sept. 30 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 18th in deaths due to COVID and 26th in COVID-related hospitalizations.
