The 2017 ACT report released this week showed that Coweta County School System students overall continued to outscore state and national averages for the college entrance exam.
The school system’s average composite ACT score rose to 21.7 in 2017, compared to a Georgia composite score of 21.4 on the exam and a national composite score of 21.0. All three Coweta County School System high schools outperformed the national ACT composite average.
The ACT is a national college admissions examination that measures what students learn in high school to determine their academic readiness for college. The ACT composite is the exam’s overall score, which combines the ACT’s four subject tests (English, Mathematics, Reading and Science). ACT results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S..

The ACT results released this week were for test-takers who graduated in 2017. 923 students – or about 60% – in Coweta County’s 2017 graduating class took the exam.
“We continue to work as a school system to prepare students for opportunities beyond high school,” said Superintendent Steve Barker.  “These results reflect that those efforts are paying off for our students. The hard work of our teachers and students is appreciated, as is the support of our parents and community stakeholders.”
Barker noted that the Coweta County School System’s high school block scheduling structure allows students to take 32 courses over four years of high school, compared to 24 courses taken by students in many school systems that use a traditional high school schedule. That provides students more opportunities to take advanced content during their high school career.
“By making opportunities for students to take Advanced Placement or dual-enrollment courses, our school system is helping students to be better prepared for college and career after graduation.”
2017 was the fourth year in a row that the Coweta County School System’s average ACT score increased from the year before, and the fourth year that the system’s average ACT score topped the national average. In 2017, Coweta students’ overall average was higher than the national average on all four test sections (English, Reading, Science and Math).
Georgia students overall showed continued improvement on the ACT in 2017, increasing the state’s average composite score and the percentage of students meeting the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks.
Georgia students’ average composite score increased from 21.1 last year to 21.3 in 2017.  National averages on the ACT increased from an average composite score of 20.8 to 21.0.
Georgia’s average composite score of 21.4 was higher, for the second consecutive year and the second time in state history, than the national average. Georgia also outperformed the nation in English, reading, science, and mathematics.
“Georgia students continue to increase their scores – and outpace the nation – on the ACT,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “This is a testament to the hard work of Georgia’s students and educators as they enjoy greater flexibility and fewer state restrictions in the classroom. We are seeing our students’ performance trending upward on multiple indicators of academic achievement, and seeing positive signs like a four-percentage-point jump in the percentage of students meeting the College Readiness Benchmark for reading is encouraging as we continue to focus on literacy.”
