Events, Ceremonies set for Memorial Day Weekend in Coweta

The Memorial Day weekend here in Coweta County will be a busy one.

Fresh off graduations at Northgate, East Coweta and Newnan High Schools, the weekend kicks off with local VFW members at Walmart from Friday (May 27) through Monday (May 30) giving out Buddy Poppies. Those members will be at Sam’s Club on Saturday and Sunday.

Volunteers are needed to help put United States of America flags on veteran’s graves at both Oak Hill and Forest Lawn Cemeteries in Newnan on Saturday. Meet at either cemetery at 9 a.m. where flags and maps to the veteran’s graves will be distributed. Also, volunteers need to bring a screwdriver to make holes in the ground for the flags.

Later on Saturday, Senoia will host a Memorial Day Celebration beginning at 5 p.m. at Marimac Lakes, located at 140 Pylant Street. Live music, plus a DJ, fun, food and fireworks will all be part of the festivities. 

On Monday Memorial Day, Remembrance ceremonies will take place in Senoia, beginning at 9 a.m. and Newnan at 11 a.m.

The Senoia Cemetery is the site for Senoia’s event as a special program honoring fallen service members will take place. Senator Matt Brass who represents the 28th District, which includes Coweta and Heard, as well as portions of Troup, Carroll and Fulton Counties, will be a guest speaker at the event. Also speaking at the Ceremony of Remembrance will be Brigadier General Mark Gelhardt. Prior to the start of the event, Boy Scouts from Turin Methodist Church will mark each veteran’s grave in the Senoia City Cemetery with an American flag. The Full Throttle Formation Team is scheduled to perform a flyover at the event, weather permitting. The East Coweta High School JROTC will serve as Color Guard at the event. Jonathan Leak will perform on the bagpipes and Madison Batchelor, a choral student from East Coweta High School will sing the National Anthem.  

The Newnan event will be downtown at Veteran’s Park. Bring a chair for the ceremony that will have several guest speakers. Lunch will be served at the Coweta Veterans Club, located at 130 Veterans Club Road, just off Hwy. 29 North.

A couple of additional non-Memorial Day events will be taking place on Saturday (May 28).

Southern Roots Nursery and Gardens continues its Food Truck Saturday with Rivera’s BBQ in attendance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Southern Roots is located at 726 Hwy. 29 North in Newnan.

And The Bays will host its 5th Anniversary Party with eight local bands scheduled for an all-day and evening event at its 20 Jefferson Street location in downtown Newnan. Jeanine Duke kicks off the party at noon, followed by Southside Band at 1:30 p.m., Mary Martin at 3 p.m., Band One at 4:30 p.m., Kris Youman’s Band at 6 p.m., Pete & Pete Band at 7:30 p.m., Groovey at 9 p.m. and Men of SAB at 10:30 p.m.
