Newnan High, Atkinson Elementary announce plans
From Special Reports
Below are letters from Principals Chase Puckett of Newnan High School and Ben Tarleton of Atkinson Elementary School regarding the status of the remaining 2020-21 academic calendar for both schools.
Dear Newnan High School family,
You have been in our hearts and prayers during this very difficult time. Our hearts are broken at the devastation and loss in our community. We know that recovery efforts will take some time.
Our spirits have been renewed by the outpouring of support and generosity from our community and all across our nation. We are still Newnan Strong and we will get through this together!
As we look towards the future, we are making plans for the remaining weeks of school. Our staff members have been working hard this week to make contact with each of our students to help us plan for instruction.
At this time, we are planning to resume all virtual learning for Newnan High School on Wednesday, April 14, through the remainder of the school year. Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13 will be work days for the Newnan High School staff to plan for online instruction. We are hoping to offer limited space for students who may not have internet access or are currently unable to remain in their homes due to the damage from the tornado.
We are currently attempting to contact all of our students who are unaccounted for by phone, email, social media, text, or home visit. To assist, a Newnan High School hotline has been set up to operate on Monday and Tuesday, April 12 and 13, 2021, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
If you need assistance being connected to our community resources or need to speak to someone about your situation, we are here to help! Beginning on Monday, April 12, you will be able to contact Newnan High School by phone at (770) 254-2880. For now, I can be reached by email at [email protected]. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if we can assist you in any way.
Chase Puckett, Principal
Newnan High School
Dear Atkinson Families,
You have been in our hearts and prayers since last week’s life changing storm. Our hearts have been broken to see the damage to the homes of our families. We know that the recovery efforts for our families will take some time. At the same time, our spirits have been renewed by the community support for our students and staff.
Unfortunately, our school was also significantly damaged during the storm. We have been notified by engineers that it will take several weeks to complete the repairs needed. District staff members have been working for the last week to determine an alternate location for our Atkinson students and staff. Multiple community partners have responded to our needs. One of our long-standing partners, West Georgia Technical College, which typically works with us to serve our dual-enrolled high school students, has graciously offered for us to use a portion of their campus for our daily school operation. Their offer will provide a way for us to conduct face-to-face instruction for our students for the remainder of the school year.
As a result of this incredible collaborative partnership, daily school operations for Atkinson will be moved to West Georgia Technical College Coweta Campus (located at 200 Campus Drive, Newnan) beginning Wednesday, April 14th. Faculty and staff will use Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13 to prepare for the transition and plan for the successful return of our students back to school.
The Atkinson phone line (770-254-2835) will be open Monday, April 12 at 8 a.m. for parents to call with any questions or concerns. If you need assistance being connected to our community resources or need to speak to someone about your situation, we are here to
help! Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if we can assist you in any way. We will share a Question and Answer document with more details tomorrow.
While I know we all want to be back walking the halls of Atkinson Elementary, we are very thankful we can finish the year together. Take care of your family, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Mr. Ben Tarleton, Principal
