New scoreboard at Drake Stadium debuts tonight

From Coweta County Schools Press Release

The Newnan Cougars will have some extra support from their community when they go out to face Alexander High School at Drake Stadium tonight.

A new LED scoreboard has been installed at the top of Drake stadium, in front of Max Bass gym, courtesy of the Newnan High School Touchdown Club and several local businesses.

“I think it’s awesome,” said Cougars head coach Chip Walker. “It adds to Drake, which I already think is the best stadium in the state of Georgia.”

The new Daktronics LED scoreboard – also referred to unofficially and affectionately as Drake Stadium’s own “jumbotron” – is 16 ft. by 30 ft. multipurpose video display mounted on a 30 ft. by 30 ft. scoreboard, bearing the Newnan Cougars name and Newnan High logo above.

The board was erected earlier this week and will be active for the Cougars’ game tonight.  The Cougars are also looking forward to the team’s 1,000th game, played in Drake Stadium on October 11.

The new scoreboard has been provided by local private funding.  Major donors included Southern States Bank, Newnan Utilities, Toyota of Newnan, Beck Facility Services, Truett’s Chick-fil-A, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Crain Oil Company, Country Financial, and Georgia Bone and Joint, along with other local sponsors.

The Newnan High School Touchdown Club, led by club president Alan Barnett, is a non-profit organization established to support the NHS Cougar football program and its team members. The Touchdown Club ( is a parent/volunteer-run organization which provides scholarships, equipment and uniforms, and other support for the team.

Touchdown Club member Allison Kelleher said that the new scoreboard was made possible by one thing: “Community.”

“We approached business that have been supportive of Newnan High School for years, and they all wanted to be a part of it,” she said.  “We are all excited.  We are proud of Newnan High and proud of our supportive community.”

“The Newnan High School community is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the Newnan High School Touchdown Club, the Coweta County School System, and all of the community leaders who have pushed for this addition to Drake Stadium,” said NHS Principal Chase Puckett.

Puckett also notes that the Drake’s new addition will have a wide benefit.  “The upgrade of our scoreboard to this cutting edge technology will add to the learning opportunities for students learning 21st century career skills.  I can’t wait to see our band students, athletes, staff and community on the digital scoreboard.”
