From Staff Reports

Despite a significant decrease in COVID-19 cases here in Coweta County, record-setting numbers did occur in October regarding COVID-related deaths and hospitalizations.

Coweta County confirmed 428 cases of COVID-19 in October – per the Georgia Department of Public Health – some 1,130 fewer cases than in September. The daily average in October was 13.8 cases per day compared to September’s 51.9 daily rate.

Just the opposite occurred in October regarding COVID-related deaths and hospitalizations. Coweta set a new monthly record with 53 deaths in the month, bettering the old mark of 48 set in September. The county had 94 hospitalizations, which was the third-highest monthly total trailing only September 2021 (199) and August 2021 (95).

Coweta County Schools have also seen a drastic fall in COVID-19 cases. In a press release from Coweta County Schools on Oct. 28, the school system’s School Health Program recorded just 19 new positive cases of COVID-19 among Coweta County’s 3,000 staff and 23,000 students the previous week.  During the five-day period before that, 51 new cases were reported.

The press release also stated that at the height of the most recent surge of COVID activity in Coweta County in the month of August, weekly totals reached a high of 391 new cases in one five-day period (August 27-September 2).

The decrease in COVID cases has allowed almost all of Coweta County’s 33 schools to return basic preventative measures, with no Coweta schools on the highest precautionary tier.

“This is the lowest we’ve seen our case rate since we began tracking COVID numbers last school year,” said Shannon Caplinger, director of the school system’s School Health Program.

The Vaccination Rate in Coweta County continues to slowly climb. Through Oct. 29, Coweta now has 69,670 people with at least one dose or 49 percent and 63,584 which are fully vaccinated for a rate of 44 percent. Full vaccination rates for neighboring counties include Fayette at 61 percent, Spalding 40 percent, Carroll 37 percent, Troup 36 percent and both Heard and Meriwether at 29 percent.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 12,729 cases, 334 deaths (with an additional 32 probable deaths) and 808 hospitalizations thru Oct. 31 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 24th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 26th in COVID-related hospitalizations.
