From Staff Reports

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.”

There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. This month – it’s Modern Thai in Tyrone, Ga.

Modern Thai

We are constantly surprised at the number of great restaurants tucked away in some stripmall. Sandwiched between an insurance agent and a tanning/nail salon, you open a door to, well, Nirvana. That’s especially true if you like Thai.

Welcome to Modern Thai in Tyrone, Georgia. To quote: Our chef, Darunee, has been learning how to cook authentic Thai food from her mom since she was a little girl. She helped her family run a Thai restaurant for over 20 years. The name of the restaurant “Modern Thai” is the same as her mother’s, based in San Francisco. Her mom is now retired, but she would like to carry on that name and bring the original recipes and experience to the city of Tyrone and the Atlanta area.

Open for lunch and dinner, this is the type of restaurant you want to keep coming back to because of the mouth-watering options. Each dish is unique and the descriptions alone are worth the trip.

Just a couple we tried at the last visit included Panang Beef, or “Sliced beef tenderloin sautéed in panang curry topped with minced kaffir lime leaf and bell pepper served with jasmine blue rice.”

Next up for me will be the Spaghetti Keo Mao: “Stir fried spaghetti, shrimp, scallop, calamari, sweet onion, bell peppers, green beans with fresh chili, garlic & Holy basil.” And for an appetizer, since I am a sucker for calamari: “Deep fried calamari rings with tentacles in salt and pepper batter served with pineapple chili sauce”

Let’s put it this way, coming out after lunch I looked over at Youngest and said, “wow, that was really good.”

I am looking forward to taking the Little Black Dress.
