It’s a Leap Year Weekend here in Coweta County and a busy one at that with many family-friendly events taking place.
Starting Friday, the two-day Children’s Consignment Sale starts at Newnan First United Methodist Church for PreSchool and Kindergarten Children.
On Leap Year Saturday, Newnan Carnegie Library begins opening on Saturdays with a Leap Into Saturdays Celebration, Coweta County Animal Control is hosting a Leap into 2020 Pet Adoption Event, a free Family History Research Seminar called Discover Your Roots is in Sharpsburg, the Cook the Book Book Club meets at Central Library, Peachtree City hosts its annual Father-Daughter Dance, the Callaway Mills Exhibit opens at Legacy Museum in LaGrange, there’s a Ladies’ DIY Day and Cuff Show in Sharpsburg and Crumpton Furniture’s Leap Year Sale closes as customers take an extra 20 percent off.

Weather-wise, the weekend will be mostly dry. Today look for mostly sunny skies with a high near 55 degrees and gusty winds. A passing afternoon shower can’t be ruled out. On Saturday, it’s back to sunny skies and a high only 52 with Northwest winds at 10-15 mph. And on Sunday, sunny skies with a high of 61. A 20 percent rain chances comes in Sunday night. Overnight lows will be near freezing.

PreSchool and Kindergarten Children’s Consignment Sale
Hosted by Newnan First United Methodist Church. Two-day event. Gently used items of children’s clothing (infant to size 14), accessories, baby gear, bedding, books, furniture, games, high chairs, indoor and outdoor play equipment, shoes, strollers, toys, videos and more. 400 consignors. Bring your own shopping bag.

Newnan Trolley Service
This free service is offered to take riders from downtown Newnan to Ashley Park. Runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pickup locations at City Hall, the Governor Ellis Arnall Parking Lot on Madison Street, and Ashley Park at Dillard’s (West Entrance) and Regal Cinemas. The first pickup is at 1 p.m. at City Hall with the last full route starting at 7 p.m.

Strange LaGrange: Ghosts, Legends, & Spirited History – A Walking Tour
Join Troup County Historical Society Docent and Southern Spirit Guide, Lewis Powell, for a ghostly tour of downtown LaGrange to hear about the spirited history of Troup County and those who call it home. Tours will depart from the Legacy Museum on Main, rain or shine, and move through the downtown area. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and an umbrella if the weather calls for rain!

3rd Annual Run the Ridge 5K
Join the Southern Conservation Trust and the City of Fayetteville at the Third Annual Run the Ridge 5K. Enjoy yourself as you run or walk 3.1 miles through the beautiful Ridge Nature Area in Fayetteville. During the race, you will run along a creek and through a beautifully wooded area. All proceeds from the Run the Ridge 5K go towards local conservation efforts.

Discover Your Roots
This year’s Free Family History Research Seminar will be held in Sharpsburg. The building will have exclusive 1-day access to records from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, including the Freedmen’s Bureau records. Discover Your Roots (Georgia) is a free genealogy seminar which teaches family history research for all levels. Co-hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints metro Atlanta congregations and the Fayette County NAACP, we help participants find their ancestors, interpret DNA tests, and navigate online tools through group workshops and personal instruction.

Newnan Carnegie hosts Leap Into Saturdays Celebration
The Newnan Carnegie Library has announced it will begin opening on Saturday mornings and will host a celebratory event on Leap Day (Feb. 29) with library tours, games, refreshments, and crafts upstairs.

Leap into 2020 Pet Adoption Event
The Coweta County Animal Control department is hosting a Pet Adoption Event. Leap Year only happens once every four years! Let this be the day that love leaps into your lap during the Leap into 2020 Adoption Event. Cat and dog adoption fees are $25 plus any applicable medical costs. Renters can pick up landlord forms ahead of time at animal services and bring the completed form that day to adopt! Cats and lots of adoptable dogs available!! Door prizes throughout the day!

Callaway Mills Exhibit Opens
The Callaway Mills Exhibit honoring the 120th Anniversary of Unity Cotton Mill will take place on Saturday at the Legacy Museum in LaGrange. In 1900, Fuller E. Callaway, Sr., and a group of local citizens chartered the first mill in the Callaway-Truitt group of companies, Unity. In a partnership with Troup County Archives, Hills & Dales Estate will co-host this exhibit.

Cook the Book meets at Central Library
The Central Library invites food lovers and those wanting to get out of their cooking comfort zones to join us each month for a unique book club called Cook The Book. We have chosen a title for each month from our cookbook collection. Instead of bringing discussion questions like a traditional book club, everyone brings a dish from the cookbook for a potluck. We talk, eat, share, and bounce ideas off of each other.
