The weekend events calendar is slowly beginning to pick up as the second weekend of January has arrived.

On Friday, Exercise is Medicine kicks off the weekend at the Newnan Carnegie Library, Sweetland on Ice in LaGrange has another three-day weekend for ice skaters, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Service will take place at the Mt. Olive UMC in Newnan.

On Saturday, Keep Newnan Beautiful and Coweta County host Tire Amnesty Day at the Hunter Complex in Sharpsburg, the HELP Spay/Neuter Clinic holds its low-cost vaccine day, the Frostbite 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is in Peachtree City, the Free Dental Van is at Nissan of Newnan, CAREing Paws takes place at the PTC Library, the 33rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade hits the downtown Newnan streets at noon and Saturday night, Action Wrestling has an 8-card event at East Coweta High.

Weather-wise, rain once again moves into the Coweta County area on a weekend and this time, a chance of severe weather is in play for Saturday. On Friday, look for a high of 66 degrees with rain chances up to 80 percent by evening. On Saturday, high temperatures will reach 71 degrees before a cold front moves through with thunderstorms, strong winds and a 100 percent rain chance. Finally on Sunday, partly cloudy skies early then rain moves in again Sunday night.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 10

Exercise is Medicine
The Carnegie Library hosts this 45-minute class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. A wellness class for prevention and management of chronic disease conditions. Call for details.

Newnan Trolley Service
This free service is offered to take riders from downtown Newnan to Ashley Park. Runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pickup locations at City Hall, the Governor Ellis Arnall Parking Lot on Madison Street, and Ashley Park at Dillard’s (West Entrance) and Regal Cinemas. The first pickup is at 1 p.m. at City Hall with the last full route starting at 7 p.m.

Sweetland On Ice features a 5,500 square foot covered outdoor ice rink, skating helpers for beginners, seated area with fire pits, and tasty snacks from our concession area. Daniel Holloway returns as the Sweetland On Ice concessionaire for the season alongside Harvest Coffee & Bakery serving up all of your favorite treats!

Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Service
The MLK Commemorative Service is the first part of the two-day Celebration sponsored by the Easter Star Newnan Chapter No. 483. The second event – the MLK Jr. Parade – will follow on Saturday. The Commemmorative Services will be held at the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Newnan.

Strange LaGrange: Ghosts, Legends, & Spirited History – A Walking Tour
Join Troup County Historical Society Docent and Southern Spirit Guide, Lewis Powell, for a ghostly tour of downtown LaGrange to hear about the spirited history of Troup County and those who call it home. Tours will depart from the Legacy Museum on Main, rain or shine, and move through the downtown area. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and an umbrella if the weather calls for rain!

Coweta County Tire Amnesty Day at Hunter Complex
Keep Newnan Beautiful and Coweta County are teaming up to host its annual Tire Amnesty Day. This event is rain or shine and will be held at the Hunter Recreation Complex just off Highway 16 in 8 Sharpsburg and will be the only location for the entire county. This year the program will be able to take car and truck tires without rims for free.

CAREing Paws Program at Peachtree City Library
The CAREing Paws Program utilizes registered therapy dogs to improve literacy skills for children. If your child struggles with reading this may be for you. Children must have a basic knowledge of reading. Open to children in Grades K-5. The library offers six, 20-minute sessions. Parents must reserve a time slot in advance for their child. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in downtown Newnan
The 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration Parade will take place through the streets of downtown Newnan. The event is sponsored by the Eastern Star Newnan Chapter No. 483. It begins at noon from Newnan High School and will proceed to the downtown Square. The parade will turn onto Salbide Street, then head up Greenville Street, turn left onto North Court Square and then left onto West Court Square and down LaGrange Street back to the high school. Grand Marshals this year will be Monique Bentley and Clifton Fisher of the African American Alliance, Inc.
