Weekly Report: Cases continue down trend in Coweta County

THE SKINNY – Coweta County has seen its weekly COVID-19 cases drop in five of the last six weeks.

Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, October 5 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County confirmed 55 new COVID-19 cases in the past week of Sept. 29-Oct. 5, dropping by 17 cases from the previous reporting period of Sept. 22-28. That’s the lowest number of new cases in a week since posting 51 from April 21-27. In addition, Coweta cases have fallen in five of the past six weeks and nine of the past eleven dating from 361 from July 21-27.

The county did confirm 1 death and 7 hospitalizations in the past week, up 1 in both categories. Combined with last week’s 6 hospitalizations, it was the first time in over a year that Coweta had back-to-back weeks with less than 10 hospitalizations. Coweta recorded five and nine on weeks of August 7-13 and August 14-20, respectively, back in 2021.

In September, Coweta had 475 cases (15.8 per day) with 4 deaths and 62 hospitalizations. The cases and hospitalizations are the lowest totals in a month for the county since April 2022.

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, 191,140 vaccines have been applied to Coweta residents thru Oct. 5 with 997 last week.  The Coweta vaccination rate remains unchanged from a week ago – 56 percent with one dose (Georgia is at 66 percent), 51 percent fully vaccinated (Georgia is at 58 percent), 45 percent have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot (Georgia 44 percent), and 23 percent have had an additional dose (Georgia 25 percent).

The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 13.9 percent on Oct. 5, with the two-week infection rate dropping to 8.4 percent (the lowest two-week rate since April 27). Last week, those test rates were at 13.9 and 11.0 respectively.

Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 25,843 cases, 446 deaths (with an additional 67 probable deaths) and 1,928 hospitalizations thru Oct. 5 from when the pandemic began some 31-plus months ago. Coweta ranks 20th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 16th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia experienced declines in all five major COVID-19 categories for the week of Sept. 29-Oct. 5.

Georgia confirmed 3,420 cases for an average of 488.6 per day last week – falling by 288 cases from the previous week of Sept. 22-28.

Other totals last week included 85 deaths (down 3), 392 hospitalizations (down 157), 35 ICU admits (down 3) and the number of COVID patients hospitalized on Oct. 5 was 641 (down 76). The COVID patients hospitalized were only 3.9 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia and is the lowest number since June 6.

The overall positive test rate in Georgia is 12.7 percent on Oct. 5, with the two-week infection rate falling from 7.2 percent last week to 6.0 now.

Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 2,241,312 cases, 33,524 deaths, 127,015 hospitalizations and 16,950 ICU admits thru Oct. 5 from when the pandemic began.
