Weekly Report: Cases, hospitalizations drop in Coweta

THE SKINNY – Coweta County saw both COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations drop in the same week for the first time since late June.

Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, August 3 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County once again recorded at least 300 new COVID-19 cases in the past week of July 28 to Aug. 3, but dropped by 41 cases from the previous week. It’s the first time since June 23-29 cases fell, but Coweta still confirmed 320 cases for an average of 45.7 per day and the fourth consecutive week above 300.

The daily high number of cases came on Thursday, July 28 with 62. In fact, Coweta posted 40 cases-or-more six days in the past week. 

Coweta also saw hospitalizations decline by 6 with 34 confirmed for the week.

And for the second straight week, Coweta did not confirm any deaths.

Coweta finished the month of July with 1,479 cases (47.7 per day), 5 deaths and 136 hospitalizations. It’s the 6th-highest total for cases and 4th-highest total for hospitalizations in a month since the pandemic started in March 2020.

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, Coweta County has reported 186,195 vaccines applied thru Aug. 3 with 518 last week.  The Coweta vaccination rate is 56 percent for people with one dose (Georgia is at 65 percent) and 51 percent fully vaccinated (Georgia is at 57 percent) as of Aug. 3. In addition, 44 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot (Georgia 44 percent). 

The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 13.6 percent on Aug. 3, with the two-week infection rate remaining at 31.0 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 13.5 and 31.0 respectively.

Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 24,223 cases, 436 deaths (with an additional 64 probable deaths) and 1,755 hospitalizations thru Aug. 3 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 20th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 16th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia experienced decreases in three COVID-19 categories for the week of July 28-Aug. 3.

Georgia confirmed 20,252 cases for an average of 2,893.1 per day for last week – dropping by 1,366 cases from the previous week of July 21-27.

Other totals from July 28-Aug. 3 included 92 deaths (same as the previous week), 974 hospitalizations (down 43) and 55 ICU admits (down 3).

The number of COVID patients hospitalized on Aug. 3 was 1,066 or 9.6 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. It was a decrease from the previous week and stopped a streak of 14 weeks that the number had risen. 

The overall positive test rate in Georgia is 12.6 percent on Aug. 3, with the two-week infection rate standing at 24.8 percent.

Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 2,146,655 cases, 32,488 deaths, 120,679 hospitalizations and 16,554 ICU admits thru Aug. 3 from when the pandemic began.
