Weekly Report: Coweta County cases continue to rise

THE SKINNY – Coweta County averaged 23.1 new COVID-19 cases per day last week, the most since early February.

Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, May 25 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County confirmed 162 new COVID-19 cases in the past week (May 19-25) for an average of 23.1 per day. That’s the most since 162 for the week of Feb. 5-11 and an increase of 29 from the previous week. 

The daily high for number of cases came on Saturday, May 21 with 34. Coweta also posted 34 on Wednesday, May 18. 

In addition, Coweta did confirm 1 death (up 1) and had 12 hospitalizations (down 5) in the past week. 

For the month of May, Coweta has recorded 451 new cases (18.0 per day) with 3 deaths and 77 hospitalizations. The cases and hospitalizations are the most in a month since February.

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, Coweta County has reported 180,659 vaccines applied.  The Coweta vaccination rate is 55 percent for people with one dose and 50 percent for fully vaccinated as of May 25. In addition, 43 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot. 

The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 12.8 percent on May 25, with the two-week infection rate continuing to rise and stands at 14.8 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 12.8 and 12.3 respectively.

Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 21,505 cases, 429 deaths (with an additional 62 probable deaths) and 1,511 hospitalizations thru May 25 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 21st in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 19th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia posted increases in cases, hospitalizations and ICU admits but dropped in numbers for deaths for the week of May 19-25.

Georgia confirmed 11,064 cases for an average of 1,580.6 per day for last week – an increase of 2,585 cases from the previous week of May 12-18.

Other last week totals included 40 deaths (down 21 from the previous week), 407 hospitalizations (up 29) and 48 ICU admits (up 6).

The number of COVID patients hospitalized last week was 540 or 3.4 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. It was an increase of 75 from the previous week.

The overall positive test rate in Georgia was 12.1 percent on May 25, with the two-week infection rate standing at 11.9 percent.

Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,981,571 cases, 31,794 deaths, 113,491 hospitalizations and 16,059 ICU admits thru May 25 from when the pandemic began.
