THE SKINNY – For the second consecutive week, Coweta County had only 1 COVID-related death.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Sunday, May 9.  Below is a summary for the week of May 3-9 with data from the Georgia DPH on Coweta County, neighboring counties and the state of Georgia.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 50 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 1 death and 8 hospitalizations.

The 50 confirmed cases (down 13 from a week ago) gave Coweta an average of 7.1 per day. The high mark for the week was 10 on Sunday, May 9. The county has now recorded 61 consecutive days below 20 cases.

The 1 death marked the 2nd consecutive week the county’s COVID-related deaths totaled 1, the first time that has happened since the weeks of Dec. 6-12 and 13-19.

The 8 hospitalizations (up 1 from last week) gave Coweta an average of 1.1 per day. The high mark for hospitalizations last week was 3 on Tuesday (May 4) and Wednesday (May 5).

In May, Coweta has recorded 67 cases (7.4 per day), 1 death (0.1 per day) and 8 hospitalizations (1.1 per day).  So far, May’s numbers are slightly down when compared to daily averages in April –  8.2 cases per day,  0.8 deaths  and 1.3 hospitalizations.

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.5 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 4.8 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.6 and 5.5, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 8712 cases, 206 deaths (with an additional 12 probable deaths) and 357 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases and 18th in deaths due to COVID.

The age group of 25-34 year olds had the most new COVID cases in the past week with 10, followed by 35-44 and 55-64 with 9 each.

GEORGIA CASES

In the past week, Georgia confirmed 4876 new COVID-19 cases (down 1129 from a week ago) for an average of 697 per day. Georgia now owns a streak of 71 straight days below 2000 cases, the longest streak since April 19 to June 27.

Georgia also recorded 123 deaths in the past week (down 68 from a week ago) for an average of 18 per day. Other numbers included 526 hospitalizations (down 58) and 111 ICU Admits (up 7).

Four patient census categories dropped in the past week. ICU Bed Occupancy fell to 2242 (down 81 from last week) or 75.3 percent capacity. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state decreased to 11,660 (down 9 from last week) or at 77.1 percent capacity. COVID Patients Hospitalized in Georgia dropped by 83, now standing at 1023 which is 6.7 percent of all statewide hospital patients. And Adult Ventilators in use fell, now at 961 (down 23) or 26.7 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.2 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 4.7 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.3 and 5.0, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 886,374 cases, 17,701 deaths, 62,198 hospitalizations and 10,216 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (184 on Feb. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).

ONE YEAR AGO

On May 10, 2020, Georgia had confirmed a cumulative total of 33,476 new COVID-19 cases with 1405 deaths.

Coweta had confirmed 276 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 4 deaths on this date a year ago.

Cumulative case and death totals in Coweta and surrounding counties thru May 10 had Fulton with 3508-144, Carroll at 395-17, Coweta 276-4, Spalding 235-11, Fayette 199-12,  Troup 186-5, Meriwether 65-1 and Heard 14-1.
