THE SKINNY – Coweta County recorded only 1 COVID-related death in the past week, which is just the second time since Jan. 1 to post a lone death in a week.

The Daily Status Report of the COVID-19 pandemic has been issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health for Sunday, May 2.  Below is a summary for the week of April 26-May 2with data from the Georgia DPH on Coweta County, neighboring counties and the state of Georgia.

COWETA COUNTY CASES

Coweta County confirmed 54 new COVID-19 cases for the past week with 1 death and 7 hospitalizations.

The 54 confirmed cases (down 13 from a week ago) gave Coweta an average of 7.7 per day last week. The high mark for the week was 11 on Monday, April 26. The county has now recorded 54 consecutive days below 20 cases.

The 1 death (down 4 from last week) was the lowest weekly total since March 29-April 4. It was also just the second time a lone death has been recorded in a week since Jan. 1.

The 7 hospitalizations (unchanged from last week) gave Coweta an average of 1.0 per day. The high mark for hospitalizations last week was 3 on Wednesday (April 28).

In April, Coweta finished with 247 cases (8.2 per day) with 25 deaths (0.8 per day) and 39 hospitalizations (1.3 per day). Coweta tied the monthly record-high of 39 hospitalizations which was also set in February. For comparison month-to-month, the following numbers are from March – 373 cases (12.0 per day) with 30 deaths (0.9 per day) and 29 hospitalizations (0.9 per day).

The positive test rate of all persons tested in Coweta is 10.6 percent, and in the last two weeks stands at 5.5 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 10.6 and 5.3, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 8662 cases, 205 deaths (with an additional 12 probable deaths) and 349 hospitalizations since the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 23rd in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases and 18th in deaths due to COVID.

The age group of 25-34 year olds had the most new COVID cases in the past week with 10, followed by 55-64 with 9.

GEORGIA CASES

In the past week, Georgia confirmed 6005 new COVID-19 cases (down 623 from a week ago) for an average of 857 per day. The high mark for cases last week came on Friday (April 30) with 1027. Georgia now owns a streak of 64 straight days below 2000 cases, the longest streak since April 26 to June 27.

Georgia also recorded 191 deaths in the past week (up 18) for an average of 27 per day. The daily high was 48 on Thursday (April 29).

Three patient census categories dropped slightly in the past week. The number of In-Patient Hospital Beds in use across the state decreased to 11,669 (down 105 from last week) or at 76.9 percent capacity. COVID Patients Hospitalized in Georgia dropped by 110, now standing at 1106 which is 7.1 percent of all statewide hospital patients. Adult Ventilators in use fell, now at 984 (down 83) or 27.3 percent capacity.

ICU Bed Occupancy did, however, increase to 2323 (up 66 from last week) or 78.0 percent capacity.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 11.3 percent, and in the last two weeks, it is at 5.0 percent. Last week, those numbers were 11.4 and 5.4, respectively.

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 881,498 cases, 17,578 deaths, 61,672 hospitalizations and 10,105 ICU admits since the pandemic began.

Georgia’s single-day highs follow: cases (10,379 on Jan. 8); deaths (184 on Feb. 12); hospitalizations (611 on Jan. 6); ICU admits (97 on Aug. 12).

ONE YEAR AGO

On May 3, 2020, Georgia had confirmed a cumulative total of 28,671 new COVID-19 cases with 1181 deaths.

Coweta had confirmed 230 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 4 deaths on this date a year ago.

Cumulative case and death totals in Coweta and surrounding counties thru May 3 had Fulton with 2980-124, Carroll at 386-14, Coweta 230-4, Spalding 219-10, Fayette 183-10,  Troup 154-4, Meriwether 54-0 and Heard 14-1.
