The Shopper will not be publishing the week of July 4. We are anticipating shooting off massive amounts of fireworks and will need time to recoup. The B Zone will go out July 11th and The Paper will start hitting the streets July 12th.

The Hands-Free driving law is, if you are reading this after July 1, now in effect. You can’t hold your phone, text, email, etc. You can use Bluetooth or other hands-free ways to make calls or listen to music. Just don’t pick up the phone – literally.

Four Coweta County School System employees were honored as 2018 “Leaders of the Year” in recognition of their contributions to their schools. Newnan High School Principal Chase Puckett was chosen as Principal of the Year.  Jefferson Parkway Assistant Principal Rebecca Minerd was chosen Assistant Principal of the Year. Student Services Director Evan Horton was chosen Central Office Administrator of the Year. Coweta County School System HVAC Technician Steve Addison was the recipient of the 2018 “Robert Lee Leadership Award”. Addison is a 27-year employee of the school system.

Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager was nominated by President Trump to become U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia. Yeager has been sheriff in Coweta since 1993. The marshal’s service is the law enforcement arm of the federal court system.

Coweta County School System Bus Technicians Jamie Cash and Tim Thrower tied for first place in the West Georgia RESA regional School Bus Technicians Competition this spring, sending both to state competitions. “We’re very proud of Jamie and Tim.  This is a great honor,” said Coweta County School System Transportation Director Judy Gresham.

The Coweta County Board of Education has been recognized by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) as a 2018 Exemplary School Board. The Coweta County board was among only 35 Georgia school boards out of 180 to meet the requirements for the GSBA distinction this year. This GSBA Board Recognition Program requires a higher level of commitment from school boards and individual members. The ultimate goal is to provide a platform based on governance standards which challenges boards, but creates a culture of success for students and communities.

Northgate graduate Arthi Shankar and rising senior Ashley Dombrowski took first place in the Anatomy category of this year’s Georgia Science Olympiad, held at Emory University. Shankar and Dombrowsky (then a senior and junior) beat out 40 competing teams in the subject competition to come in first.
