Piedmont Newnan Hospital was one of 832 hospitals nationwide, and one of only 14 of the 74 graded hospitals in Georgia, to receive an “A” for its commitment to keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S., based on a recent study. The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit health care ratings organization, assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S. healthcare system. “Patient safety is our number one priority,” Mike Robertson, CEO of Piedmont Newnan, said. “Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grades help people make informed decisions when choosing where to seek medical care. Achieving this top grade demonstrates our commitment to creating a superior and safe experience for our patients.”

Perfection is the best way to describe the 2017 East Coweta Lady Indians Softball Team. On the last weekend in October, East Coweta captured the GHSA Class 7-A State Softball Championship with a 10-0 blanking of Etowah. Head coach Franklin DeLoach led the Lady Indians to a perfect 36-0 record as East Coweta brought home its first fast-pitch softball state title.

Former Newnan High and UGA standout linebacker Alec Ogletree hit the jackpot, after agreeing  to a four-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams worth $42 5million. Ogletree was drafted 30th overall by the Rams in the 2013 NFL Draft. He is in his 5th season with the Rams and has started a total of 57 games during his career, racking up 441 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 5 interceptions.

Pete Skandalakis, the Coweta District Attorney for the past 25 years, is retiring and will take over as the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia. That group works to train prosecutors across the state.

More than 1,000 residents from Peachtree City and surrounding counties joined the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease at Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater on Saturday, Oct. 7. Participants raised more than $185,000 to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. Numerous walkers and teams from Coweta County participated in the event as well, including sponsors Wesley Woods, Kason Industries, Express Employment Professionals and Monarch House.Be someone’s hero

Bonnell Aluminum company is continuing a tradition of supporting student literacy that has spanned nearly a generation. The Newnan company donated dictionaries to over 1,600 Coweta County third grade students this week. Bonnell employees visited all 19 Coweta County elementary schools throughout the county on Monday and Tuesday to personally deliver Merriam-Webster dictionaries to students.  It is the 17th year the Newnan company has sponsored the county-wide donation.

Piedmont Healthcare and Kaiser Permanente have finalized a new contract, ensuring patients’ continued in-network access to all Piedmont Healthcare facilities extending through the 2021 plan year.

The negotiation and agreement were completed several months in advance of the contract termination date. The new Piedmont and Kaiser Permanente relationship includes Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and Piedmont Rockdale Hospital.

Newnan native and country music legend Alan Jackson cemented his place in Country Music history as he formally became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame at the Museum’s annual Medallion Ceremony. He joined the echelon of 130 of Country Music’s greatest names as this year’s Modern Era Artist inductee. “It’s an honor,” a humble Jackson said after his name was revealed in April. “For a man who loves country music there is no higher honor. This is the mountain top!” In selecting Jackson for membership alongside the greatest names in the genre, the Country Music Association noted, “With dozens of chart-topping singles, tens of millions of albums sold, and an unparalleled reputation as a singer and songwriter, he ranks with The Beatles, Elvis Presley and a very small handful of other transcendent artists who stand out like signposts in pop music history. He has blended the old and new in a musical style that is urban and rural, rugged and raw. He took the sounds of Country Music in his youth, and blended them with modern production in a way that made him an immediate star.”

Nominations for the 2018 Citizen of the Year are now being accepted, and the winner will be named when the Kiwanis Clubs of Coweta host the Citizen of the Year dinner in January. Deadline for nominations is Dec. 1. This award is designed to honor an individual with outstanding leadership and citizenship within our community, someone who has demonstrated exemplary vision, civic pride, and a strong commitment to a better Coweta through volunteerism and community involvement.

Coweta-Fayette EMC had its largest attendance at its annual meeting with more than 3,500 attending. The annual meeting brings members together to participate in the democratic cooperative process – electing their board members and learning more about the cooperative business. This year, James W. Fulton, Jr. (Seat 3 Fayette County), Elwood Thompson (Seat 2 Coweta County), and Ross Henry (Seat 1, Counties other than Coweta and Fayette) were re-elected for three-year terms.

Chicken Salad Chick, famous for its pulled pork sandwiches, or is it chicken salad (can’t ever get it straight) is opening its Newnan location the first part of November. It’s located in Ashley Park at 214 Newnan Crossing Bypass. This is the 14th restaurant of the franchise in the state.

Newnan-based Yamaha Motor Corp.provided a new side-by-side, the Viking VI Special Edition, to the SEAL-Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation for auction at its annual fundraiser near San Diego. The Viking VI SE raised $17,000 toward the organization’s mission of supporting SEAL members’ families. This marks Yamaha’s fourth consecutive year of aiding NSW, totaling nearly $90,000 in funding for the much-deserved recipients. The SEAL-Naval Special Warfare Family Foundation is a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2008 that raises awareness and funds for special programs in direct support of the NSW families on a local, national and global scale.

Nancy Mader, vice president at Southtowne Motors and a driving force in the fight against pancreatic cancer, was named the 2017 Woman of the Year during the third annual Power of the Purse fundraiser for Coweta Community Foundation. We can’t think of a better honoree. Congratulations Nancy.
