43rd Annual Sunrise on the Square Road Race set for Sept. 5

From Special Reports

The 43rd Annual Sunrise on the Square Road Race returns to downtown Newnan on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Due to the COVID-19 Crisis, Main Street Newnan will be hosting a “hybrid” race this year. The in-person race will still be offered at 8 a.m. on Saturday but there will also be an option for runners to “Race at your place.”

At the in-person race, runners will be released in waves to properly social distance. Chip timing is able to precisely measure your race results by registering your race chip as you run across timing mats located throughout the race course. Each individual’s clock starts as soon as runners pass over the mats located at the starting line, and likewise ends upon crossing the mats at the finish line.

Race at your place runners can participate (or just support!) at their homes or their favorite running route. Both race runners and race at your place runners will receive a race t-shirt!

The race begins in downtown Newnan and spans through “The City of Homes,” where runners will catch a glimpse of the beautiful, historic in-town neighborhoods and commercial district. The race features a 5K-USATF certified course (chipped timing), where runners will enjoy the diversity of terrain, including: long flat stretches, downhill, and uphill sections. The Sunrise on the Square Labor Day Road race welcomes both runners and walkers of all skill levels.

This event is hosted by Main Street Newnan, in partnership to benefit Newnan-Coweta Boys & Girls Club. The Newnan-Coweta Boys & Girls Club works with hundreds of kids and teens to help them reach their full potential. The club provides an environment where all youth feel safe and secure to dream, discover, and develop. Programs focus on helping succeed in school, live healthy, and become leaders. The annual presenting sponsor of the Sunrise on the Square Road Race is Mike Fitzpatrick Ford.

Runners are encouraged to register prior to August 15,  which is the end date for early registration. Runners who register after this date are not guaranteed a race t-shirt.

Early Packet Pick-Up for the Sunrise on the Square Race will take place two days at Dragonfly Running Company, located at 10 LaGrange Street in downtown Newnan. Pick-Up times are Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 3 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Free parking is available along downtown streets, and in the City of Newnan’s public parking lots, located at: 13 Lagrange Street, 25 Lagrange Street, 22 Spring Street, 6 First Avenue, 50 East Broad Street, 65 East Broad Street, 41 East Washington Street, and 22 East Broad Street.
