Weekly Report: Cases, hospitalizations continue to rise in Coweta

THE SKINNY – Coweta County recorded over 300 new COVID-19 cases for the third consecutive week while hospitalizations rose to levels not seen since January.
Below is the weekly summary of COVID-19 data thru Wednesday, July 27 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
COWETA COUNTY
Coweta County surpassed the 300-mark for new COVID-19 cases in the past week (July 21-27) with 361 or an average of 51.5 per day. It’s the third straight week above 300 and the most in a seven-day period in 25 weeks (398 from Jan. 29 to Feb. 4).
The daily high number of cases came on Monday, July 25 with 90, the most since 120 were posted on June 1. In fact, Coweta posted 30 cases-or-more six days in the past week. Coweta did snap a string of 53 days in-a-row with 10-or-more cases on Sunday with only 6 confirmed. The streak had begun on May 31.
Hospitalizations rose to 40 in the past week, an increase of 15. That’s the most hospitalizations in a week for Coweta since 43 (Jan. 22-28).
Coweta did not confirm any deaths in the past week (down 1 from the previous week).
For the month of July, Coweta has recorded 1,280 cases (47.4 per day), 5 deaths, 120 hospitalizations. It’s the 6th-highest total for cases in a month since the pandemic started in March 2020.
Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, Coweta County has reported 185,614 vaccines applied thru July 27 with 700 last week. The Coweta vaccination rate is 56 percent for people with one dose (Georgia is at 65 percent) and 51 percent fully vaccinated (Georgia is at 57 percent) as of July 20. In addition, 44 percent of Coweta residents have been fully vaccinated and had a booster shot (Georgia 43 percent).
The overall positive test rate in Coweta was 13.5 percent on July 27, with the two-week infection rate rising to 31.0 percent. Last week, those test rates were at 13.3 and 29.2 respectively.
Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 23,903 cases, 436 deaths (with an additional 64 probable deaths) and 1,721 hospitalizations thru July 27 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 20th in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 16th in COVID-related hospitalizations.
GEORGIA
Statewide, Georgia posted increases in three COVID-19 categories for the week of July 21-27 and a decline in one area.
Georgia confirmed 21,618 cases for an average of 3,088.3 per day for last week – rising by 1,873 cases from the previous week of July 14-20.
Other totals from July 21-27 included 92 deaths (down 9 from the previous week), 1,017 hospitalizations (up 243) and 58 ICU admits (up 10).
The number of COVID patients hospitalized on July 27 was 1,474 or 9.1 percent of all people hospitalized in Georgia. It was an increase of 80 from the previous week and the 14th consecutive week this number has risen. The last time COVID patients hospitalized was this high was in early March 2022.
The overall positive test rate in Georgia is 12.5 percent on July 27, with the two-week infection rate standing at 24.2 percent.
Overall, Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 2,126,403 cases, 32,396 deaths, 119,705 hospitalizations and 16,499 ICU admits thru July 27 from when the pandemic began.
