State Representative Lynn Smith (R-Newnan), chair of the House Natural Resources and Environment Committee, was recently honored with a 2026 Legislative Service Award by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) for her work during the 2026 legislative session. Rep. Smith was presented with the award at a recent Coweta County Commission meeting.

Former Coweta County educator Menlia Trammell has established a scholarship at Mercer University in memory of her husband, Dr. Robert “Bob” Trammell. Dr. Bob Trammell was a college professor and university administrator. In retirement, he moved back to his hometown of Luthersville where he served as mayor from 1999 until his death in 2016. The Robert and Menlia Moss Trammell Endowed Scholarship will offer financial assistance to students majoring in English or communication studies.

Earlier this year a Coweta County Sheriff’s K9, even though hit by a car in a chase, still managed to apprehend a person who had just robbed the Regions Bank on Bullsboro. Regions Bank donated $1,000 to Newnan Coweta Humane Society on K9 Robbi’s behalf. We used the funds to fund/build the dog exercise equipment in our dog play yards. Northgate High School and McIntosh High School Honor Society students and volunteers from a local NonProfit Alliance member, River Life, did a great deal of the building work. A local boy Scout Troop has stepped up to finish the project as an Eagle Scout project. A great community support and collaboration story all around.

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners approved the County Administrator’s appointment of Greg Shinkle to serve as Coweta County Fire Chief, effective October 1, 2026, following Robby Flanagan’s retirement after 30 years of service. “It truly is my honor to be considered for the position of Fire Chief and serve the citizens and visitors of Coweta County,” says Shinkle. “Albert Mohler said it best in his book ‘The Conviction to Lead’ – the most effective leaders are unstoppable teachers. They teach by word, example and sheer force of passion. My desire is to be a great teacher.”
