Andrew Copeland appointed to Coweta County School Board

From Coweta County Schools Press Release

The Coweta County Board of Education appointed Andrew Copeland to the school board’s District 5 seat on Tuesday, to complete the unexpired term of board member representative Winston Dowdell.

Copeland is a long-time resident of Newnan and of District 5, a graduate of Newnan High School and a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he earned a BBA in Management. He is a dispute resolution manager for Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers, a board member of Elevate Coweta Students (formerly Coweta County Communities in Schools) and the Newnan Artist-in-Residence Program (Newnan ArtRez), a YMCA coach, and a 2019 graduate of Leadership Coweta.

Copeland was among four candidates who applied for appointment to the unexpired District 5 term. The current term extends through December of 2020. The Board of Education’s 5th District seat represents portions of Newnan and central Coweta County, and broadly includes Atkinson Elementary School, Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, Newnan Crossing Elementary School, Ruth Hill Elementary School, Welch Elementary School, Smokey Road Middle School, Winston Dowdell Academy, Newnan High School and the Central Educational Center.

Board member Winston Dowdell announced that he was retiring from the seat last month.  He has held the seat since 2007, following the late Mitch Powell, Jr. in the position.  Before his board service, Dowdell was a 38-year educator, including nearly eight years as Associate Superintendent, before retiring from the Coweta County School System in 2001. During his tenure on the board, Dowdell served as school board Chairman in 2013 and 2014.

Fellow board members, and Superintendent Steve Barker and Assistant Superintendent Mark Guy, spoke fondly of Mr. Dowdell at his last meeting on December 10, noting that his service on the board and in the school system totaled 50 years of service to Coweta County students. Many board members thanked him for his friendship, advice and guidance, and his steady presence on the school board.

“You never sought the limelight,” said Board Vice-Chair Beth Barnett.  “You served selflessly as an educator and as a board member.  You led by example… You are simply a good person.”

Dowdell thanked his fellow board members, staff and District 5 voters “for letting me be a part of it.”
