From Special Reports

After a year off because of COVID-19 concerns, the Coweta County Citizen of the Year award is returning.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Coweta, which sponsor the event, said nominations are now open for the 2022 Citizen of the Year. Officials said the 2022 celebration will be a special event since it’s the thirtieth anniversary of the award.

The event is one of the highlights of the civic year in Coweta County, and the winner will be named at the Citizen of the Year dinner in January.

This award is designed to honor an individual with outstanding leadership and citizenship within our community, someone who has demonstrated exemplary vision, civic pride, and a strong commitment to a better Coweta through volunteerism and community involvement. The Citizen of the Year award annually recognizes an individual with these characteristics:

• The nominee must live in Coweta County, and his/her civic and volunteer activities must be centered in Coweta County and the surrounding area.

• Consideration will be given to those who demonstrate leadership and performance in multiple areas of community service over a period of years.

• The nominee may be an individual from any walk of life, and there are no requirements or restrictions relating to gender, age, race, religion or ethnic background.

Garnet Reynolds, the most recent Citizen of the Year, received the award in 2020. Reynolds serves as market president of the Newnan area for Truist Financial Corporation, formerly known as BB&T. “It’s not only an honor to be recognized as Citizen of the Year, but it’s even more special to be part of the community in Newnan and Coweta County and share the experience with so many friends, family and business partners. This is truly a special place,” Reynolds said.

Because it’s the thirtieth anniversary of the award, Kiwanis leaders said they are hoping to receive lots of nominations this year, perhaps for some of Coweta’s unsung heroes who aren’t always considered for such honors. Local nonprofit leaders are among those they suggested might be nominated for the award.

Kiwanian Nancy Walden said that because of the challenges our community has faced in the past year, especially following the March tornado, she believes there will be opportunities to nominate deserving individuals who helped with that response. She noted that the Kiwanis Clubs of Coweta already have plans to honor many of the groups who helped following the tornado, regardless of which individual ends up winning the actual award. “We want to honor all volunteers,” she said, and that’s one reason she hopes everyone will help spread the news about the opening of Citizen of the Year nominations.

The 2022 Citizen of the Year dinner will be held at The Newnan Centre on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. Cost for individual tickets is $35. Corporate sponsorships are now being sold for $400 for a table of eight. For additional information, please call Nancy Walden at 770-596-6428 or email her at [email protected].
