Coweta Library System, AARP to offer Free Tax Help

From Special Reports
The Coweta County Public Library System and Volunteers from the AARP Foundation have partnered once again to prepare federal and state tax returns for free.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, major changes have been implemented such as the requirements of appointments and wearing masks.
Tax preparation and free electronic filing is scheduled for every Wednesday and Thursday, beginning February 3 and ending April 15. The tax prep will take place at only one location – the Central Library, which is located at 85 Literary Lane in the Thomas Crossroads area. Meetings are by appointment only and can be made by dialing 770-683-2052.
Those wishing to take advantage of the free filing should bring a state issued I.D. for all taxpayers (husband & wife), a copy of last year’s (2019) income tax return,W-2 forms from all employers, unemployment compensation statements, SSA-1099 form if you were paid Social Security benefits, all 1099 forms showing interest and/or dividends and documents showing original purchase price of any sold assets/stocks, 1099-misc. showing any miscellaneous income, 1099-R form if you received a pension or annuity, all forms indicating federal income tax paid; dependent care provider information (name, employer ID, Social Security number); Social Security cards or other official documentation for yourself and all dependents.
Bring a voided check if you plan to have your refund direct deposited or your payment debited directly from your account. If you made charitable contributions include a statement as to the amount given. New this year, please bring the two Stimulus Payment amounts received in April 2020 and January 2021. These Stimulus Payments will not be taxed but should be included on your return.
Procedures have changed because of the Pandemic to protect our Volunteers and Clients. Face-to-face interaction will almost be eliminated. Clients are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their appointment to complete an interview sheet and present all the forms to complete the tax return and then return to their car to be available by phone for questions while the return is prepared. The return will be reviewed with the client before it is electronically filed and all forms will be returned to the client.
It is not necessary to be an AARP member and all ages are welcome. Appointments are expected to fill up very fast and encourage everyone to make their reservation early by calling the Central Library at 770-683-2052.
