February: Coweta records 4th-highest monthly death total

THE SKINNY – Coweta County had significant drops in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in February, but posted its 4th-highest total for deaths in a month.

Below is a summary of COVID-19 data thru Monday, February 28 from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

COWETA COUNTY

Coweta County confirmed 629 new cases of COVID-19 during the month of February, a decrease of 3,833 from its January totals. The county averaged 22.5 cases per day with single-day highs of 75 cases twice – Feb. 1 and Feb. 4. 

The unsettling number for February was COVID-related deaths. Coweta confirmed 40, which was the 4th-highest monthly death total since the pandemic began, trailing only the October 2021 record-high of 53, September 2021 total of 46 and a year earlier, 41 in February 2021. It marked an increase of 25 deaths from January’s totals. The county tied the daily record-high of 6 deaths on Feb. 9 (also occurring on Sept. 16, 2021 and Oct. 15, 2021).

Hospitalizations dropped by 144 in February from last month’s totals. Coweta confirmed 77 hospitalizations in February, the 6th-most in a month. The daily high for hospitalizations was 8 which happened twice – Feb. 3 and Feb. 22.

Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, Coweta County has reported 164,177 vaccines applied through Feb. 28.  The Coweta vaccination rate is 47 percent for people fully vaccinated and 40 percent fully vaccinated with a booster shot. 

The positive test rate this week of all persons tested in Coweta on Feb. 28 was 13.3 percent overall with the two-week infection rate at 4.6 percent. On Jan. 31, those test rates were at 13.4 and 26.5, respectively.

Overall, Coweta has confirmed cumulative totals of 20,763 cases, 414 deaths (with an additional 50 probable deaths) and 1,319 hospitalizations thru Feb. 28 from when the pandemic began. Coweta ranks 21st in Georgia (out of 159 counties) in cumulative cases, 14th in deaths due to COVID and 19th in COVID-related hospitalizations.

GEORGIA

Statewide, Georgia posted 68,833 new cases of COVID-19 in the month of February for an average of 2,458 per day. It’s a decrease of 353,633 cases from the month of January saw Georgia average 13,627 cases per day.

Georgia confirmed 2,131 deaths in February which was an increase of 961 from the previous month. 

Georgia confirmed 4,622 hospitalizations for an average of 165.1 per day in February – a decrease of 3,531 from January’s totals.

Georgia confirmed 451 ICU admissions for an average of 16.1 per day in February – a decrease of 118 from January.

Regarding vaccinations, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 14,356,041 vaccinations have been applied in Georgia through Feb. 28. Georgia residents now have a full vaccine rate of 55 percent with 39 percent both fully vaccinated plus taken a booster shot.

The overall positive test rate of all persons tested in Georgia is 12.6 percent, and the two-week infection is at 5.0 percent on Feb. 28. 

Georgia has confirmed cumulative totals of 1,911,333 cases, 29,726 deaths, 107,654 hospitalizations and 15,387 ICU admits thru Feb. 28 from when the pandemic began.
