Plans set for Plaid Friday, Santa on the Square and Small Business Saturday
From Staff Reports
Thanksgiving weekend has become an annual mini festival in downtown Newnan and 2019 is no exception.
Following Thanksgiving Day, Main Street Newnan rolls out its holiday schedule of Plaid Friday, Santa on the Square and Small Business Saturday.
On Plaid Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), shop in Downtown Newnan and simplify your Day-After-Thanksgiving experience! The name “Plaid Friday” celebrates the idea of LOCAL! The plaid pattern represents weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday,” and is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays. Wear plaid attire during Plaid Friday and expect to SAVE, as numerous downtown businesses will offer a significant discount to any customer wearing Plaid clothing!
Santa on the Square is hosted each year later in the evening after Plaid Friday. The Santa event lasts from 6-8 p.m. as jolly ol’ Saint Nick will arrive downtown in a Fire Truck, and will immediately light the Christmas tree located on the Court House Square. After the lighting of the Christmas tree, children are invited to sit on Santa’s lap and read him their Christmas list! This annual tradition in Downtown Newnan reminds us all of the importance of the holiday season: fostering hope, charity, forgiveness and kindness.
The City of Newnan’s Leisure Services Department is bringing extra Christmas cheer and fun to this event beginning at 5 p.m. In conjunction with Main Street’s Santa on the Square, Leisure Services is hosting a Christmas Carnival packed with games such as balloon darts & ring toss, lots of prizes, a giant snow globe photo opportunity, and a build your own teddy bear station (for the first 500 people). The department has also planned a special visit by Santa’s LIVE REINDEER! The Christmas Carnival will take place on the grounds of the Courthouse Square for kids to enjoy while waiting to see Santa.
Shop Small Y’all! Small Business Saturday follows on Saturday, Nov. 30. Small Business Saturday is an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This event supports the local economy and promotes our community.
