After-Thanksgiving in Newnan: Plaid Friday, Santa on the Square, Small Business Saturday

From Staff Reports
Downtown Newnan is set to officially kickoff the holiday season with several events scheduled Thanksgiving weekend.
The holiday shopping begins today (Friday, Nov. 23) as Plaid Friday hits the streets in Newnan and later in the evening, Santa Claus arrives on the Square to light the Christmas tree and talk with the kids. And the next day, it’s Small Business Saturday which celebrates supporting small businesses not just locally, but across the country.
The name “Plaid Friday” celebrates the idea of LOCAL! The plaid pattern represents weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday,” and is designed to promote both local and independently-owned businesses during the holidays.
Customers can wear plaid attire during Plaid Friday and expect to SAVE, as numerous downtown businesses will offer a significant discount to anyone wearing Plaid clothing.
Santa on the Square will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. Santa will arrive downtown in a Fire Truck and immediately light the Christmas tree located on the Court House Square. After the lighting of the Christmas tree, children are invited to sit on Santa’s lap and read him their Christmas list! This annual tradition in Downtown Newnan reminds us all of the importance of the holiday season: fostering hope, charity, forgiveness and kindness. This event is open to the public and free of charge and welcomes children of all ages.
Shop Small Y’all – Small Business Saturday – follows the next day. Small Business Saturday is an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This event supports the local economy and promotes our community.
