Key Safety Tips from AVPRIDE
1. Stay Hydrated
● Drink Plenty of Water: Make sure to drink water regularly, especially when spending time outdoors. Dehydration can lead to serious health issues, particularly in the heat of summer.
● Avoid Sugary Drinks: Opt for water or natural fruit juices over sugary sodas and energy drinks.
2. Sun Protection
● Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before going outside, and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
● Wear Protective Clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts can provide additional protection from harmful UV rays.
3. Outdoor Activity Safety
● Supervise Children: Ensure children are supervised while playing outside, especially around water bodies like pools or lakes. Drowning remains the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 years old.
● Follow Water Safety Rules: Teach and follow water safety rules, including swimming in designated areas and never swimming alone.
4. Prescription Safety & Free LockBoxes
● Keeping a lockbox to secure your prescription medications is an excellent way to ensure their safety and prevent unauthorized access, especially during the summer when students are at home.

5. Community Engagement
● Participate in Local Events: Engage in community events and activities organized by AVPRIDE and other local organizations to foster a sense of community and togetherness.
● Volunteer: Consider volunteering for local programs to give back to the community and support those in need. https://avpride.com/volunteer/
6. Safe Driving
● Auto accidents have been the leading cause of death for teens for 60 years, with the leading causes being inexperience, distracted driving, speeding, drunk & impaired driving, no seat belts, and tired driving.
● Safe Kids Georgia encourages getting routine car seat safety checks and knowing the laws of passenger safety and car seats for younger passengers.
7. Alcohol
● By modeling responsible behavior and creating a safe environment, adults can positively influence teen attitudes and behaviors towards drinking.
● No Alcohol for Minors: Do not serve alcohol to minors or allow them to consume it in your home.
● Nearly 65% of heat related deaths in 2022 were found to have alcohol, opioids as well as prescription drugs in their systems.
8. Vaping
● Considering the risks, avoiding vaping is a wise decision for your health.
● Youth Impact: Vaping can affect brain development in teenagers and young adults, leading to cognitive and behavioral issues.
