From Special Reports

The 2019 Spring Plant Sale hosted by the Master Gardener Extension Volunteers will be held on Saturday, April 13.

The annual event will take place at the Coweta County Fairgrounds, AG Building at 275 Pine Road in Newnan. It will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out and it is open to the public.

All plants for sale have been propagated or grown by MGEVs to raise funds to support scholarship and children’s gardening programs. Customers can find the following plants at the sale – tomatoes, flowers, annuals, perennials, peppers, herbs, shrubs and trees.

It takes several months of work by many Master Gardener Extension Volunteers (MGEVs), which started in December. Teams were formed and a great selection of seeds were ordered.

In January and February, teams of MGEVs spent hours filling pots with growing mediums and planting those seeds, placing them on warming mats. Skillful volunteers also carefully took cuttings from beautiful mother plants and started them in pots. Each should be strong plants in time for the Plant Sale and will be ready for your garden.

Along with the starting of seeds and cuttings, a watering team volunteers to gently water the young growth several times a week and ensure the greenhouse is warm enough to protect the infant plants. The unusual winter weather has made this a challenge.

Beautiful plants are also taken in once they start coming up in MGEVs’ personal gardens. These plants have been nurtured with love and patience, and we are so grateful to these Master Gardeners for sharing their plants and allowing you to take home part of their gardens. All plants will be carefully labeled with name, average height, color, shade or sun preference, native plant (if the case) and many will have pictures.

Think about which places you need perennials, what vegetables or herbs you want to grow, or what annuals you will be planting to add beautiful color to containers or flower beds. Plan ahead! Bring your questions to the “Ask a Master Gardener” tent.

Customers are also encouraged to bring wagons and boxes for ease of shopping.
