Darkness in the Afternoon

The August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse

2:30 p.m. Dr. Bobby Powell, professor of Physics and directory of the Observatory at University of West Georgia, will discuss the upcoming solar eclipse. The partial eclipse will be visible, if the weather is clear, across the entire state of Georgia. The total phase (darkness) will be visible in NE Georgia. In Newnan, about 95% of the Sun will be covered at mid-eclipse. This presentation will cover the cause of eclipses, the time of the August 21, 2017 eclipse, plans for observing the eclipse as the University of West Georgia, and ways to observe the eclipse safely. All attendees will receive free eclipse glasses. Call to reserve your spot.

The Sunrise on the Square Labor Day Road Race begins in Downtown Newnan and spans through “The City of Homes” . The race is a USATF certified course featuring chipped timing, where runners will enjoy the diversity of terrain, including: long flat stretches, downhill, and uphill sections. The Sunrise on the Square Labor Day Road race welcomes both runners and walkers of all skill levels. Runners are given options to pursue a 5K route, and a 10k route.
