Weather: Wet weekend forecast through Saturday, clearing and colder Sunday

From Staff Reports

Strong cold fronts are the norm this time of the year here in Coweta County and another is set to pass through the area on Saturday, says the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

The weekend will be cloudy and wet for the first half, then much cooler and dry for the second half.

A 60 percent rain chance is forecast for today with cloudy skies and a high near 67 degrees. Tonight, rain chances drop to 20 percent but the temperature remains in the 60s.

On Saturday, the NWS says coverage of showers and thunderstorms should become more widespread as a cold front pushes across the area. Some storms Saturday could be strong to severe and capable of producing gusty to damaging winds.

Locally, downtown Newnan is scheduled to host its Christmas Parade at 6 p.m. on Saturday which is about the time the front moves through the area accompanied by a line of storms. City officials will be meeting today to determine if the parade will continue as planned or postponed to a rain date.

Saturday’s high is expected to be near 70 degrees, but then drops to a low of 36 overnight once the front passes. The day starts with South winds at 10-15 mph, gusting to 25 before winds change with the front and then are from the Northwest at 10-15.

Sunday will be sunny with North winds at 5-10 mph and an afternoon high of 56 is forecast.
